Houzz Tour: Bolts of Blue Bring Excitement to This Flat
An open-concept layout enlivened by cool colours makes for an entertaining-ready home
“The owners requested for a big wide space where they can entertain friends,” says designer Rayson Low of Starry Homestead. While this may be a common request from homeowners, what makes this home different is its noticeable use of blues to highlight the open space. And since the five-room Build-To-Order (BTO) flat came bare, the designer played up the colour selection with an eclectic theme – also another request by the owners.
Lines of deep blue, in the form of ceiling and wall moulding, are a striking contrast to the white walls. The crisp white walls and the linear effect of the blue moulding work together to elongate the space.
At the end of the living zone is a wall-to-wall bay window seat. The use of carpet grass as a wall treatment together with window blinds that resemble tatami mats give this seating spot a nature-inspired, outdoor feel.

The dining area is kept streamlined with a table and bench with multiple wood finishes, and two matching chairs. What gives the space an eclectic vibe is the trio of different-shaped lamps that hangs above.
By the main entrance also is a playful, geometric rendition of the shoe and storage cabinet. A blue niche also lends a vivid contrast to the all-white cabinetry.
The designer opted to keep the kitchen open to the living area. The cabinet doors are in glossy black and royal blue laminate. The grey honeycomb tiled backsplash balances the dark and vibrant colour scheme.
To afford the owners more space to enjoy cocktails and casual meals, the design team built an island bar using a quartz counter and art tiles. Above the island is a hanging rack with concealed strip lighting.

There is a slight departure from the pops of colour seen in the communal areas in the private zones. Here, the palette of grey, black and pale wood was chosen to emphasise the tranquil ambiance.
The focal point in the master bathroom is the large-format marble-look tiles.

A bigger master bedroom was created by changing the configuration of two bedrooms. Here, the sleeping area flows into the walk-in wardrobe.
Tying the two areas together is the flooring laid out in wood strip tiles in different tones. “We preferred something different from traditional laying, so the flooring is laid out in a diagonal manner,” says Low.

Another carefully thought-out feature in the bedroom is the 180-degree swivel TV feature wall, so the owners can watch TV from either the bed side or the wardrobe area.

The shared living-dining area with a minimal amount of furniture bolsters the idea of a wide open space that is cosy enough to accommodate guests.
The designer chose a simple, modern sofa in a stately shade of deep blue to anchor the area. An animal-shaped seat is a whimsical addition to the otherwise minimalist space.
