Clean lines, functionality and minimalism were the things the owners wanted to achieve for their new home, a four-bedroom condo that came with minimal finishing and a fully-installed kitchen. But they prefer something that is not run-of-the-mill, so they approached design firm Neu Konceptz to help them transform the unit from blah to beautiful.
Designer John Chan’s design concept was inspired by oblique shapes. He played with different textures and shapes to create unique wall coverings that top off the home’s contemporary luxury theme.

Who lives here: A family of four
Location: Leedon Heights
Size: 2,300 square feet (214 square metres)
Project duration: 8 weeks
Guests are immediately welcomed into a warm and inviting entertaining space. “We used different materials such as laminate, glass, granite, design plastering, and mirrors to create a sophisticated and luxurious feel,” the designer says. Keeping the colours of the furniture to a minimum allowed these special details to stand out.
The three-dimensional feature wall behind the living area best exemplifies the creative use of shapes and dimension. Using manual plastering techniques, the designer spent four days on site to finish the handmade design. “Such design and plastering techniques are usually practised in Europe, and are rarely used in Asia,” the designer says.

“If you look closely, you will notice overlapping oblique shapes on the feature wall. The unique detailing on the plaster creates a shimmering effect once the LED lights behind the walls are turned on,” he explains.
The overlapping design can also be seen on the TV feature wall. “We made it in the shape of the letter V, and along the sides of the plaster we spray-painted on black glass. The paint has a little shimmer which becomes visible when the LED lights are on,” he says. Giallo Cosmos granite and glass were also used to create a luxurious finish for the TV console.
A custom full-height shelving unit was also built near the dining area. Mirrors were added to the back wall of the display shelves to help reflect light and add depth to the space.
The owners enjoy hosting tea parties with family and friends and they do so in the balcony which has been transformed into a garden getaway. The patio dining set on chengai wood decking sets the stage for al fresco gatherings.

In the middle of the living area’s feature wall is the door leading to the guest bedroom. Apart from the padded bedhead, the designer picked a textured wallpaper from Korea to lend subtle visual contrast on the walls.
The owners’ favourite hue, purple, was used as accent colour in the master bedroom. “We combined royal purple with white and grey for this room. We also constructed the bedhead in the shape of diamonds using a textured fabric to achieve a sophisticated and modern finish,” says the designer.
Ample storage was among the top priorities of the owners. The designer delivered by creating discreet storage cabinets to emphasise the spaciousness.
To elevate the room’s style, the designer proposed separating the bathroom and bedroom with a glass partition, which the owners agreed to. A freestanding bathtub was put in place to foster a relaxing atmosphere in the bath. Black and white blinds were also installed to provide privacy as needed.
“Both the children’s rooms also adopt a contemporary, minimalist design inspired by clean lines,” the designer says.
To maximise the space, the designer used the bay window to fit an L-shape table and full-length bookshelf. This is now the perfect hangout space for the girls who love to read.
The bedrooms also share a bathroom, which can be accessed through sliding doors from each room.

The design for both rooms may be identical down to the desk and bay window seating, but they are enlivened through different accent colours. Blue and purple, the favourite colours of the two children, were used for the padded headboards and furniture.
