Houzz Tour: Dark Hues Anchor This Modern Industrial Apartment
Reconfiguring the layout made this modern industrial apartment look more spacious
The homeowners’ wish list for their resale apartment was straightforward: a walk-in wardrobe for the master bedroom and separate ‘wet’ and ‘dry’ kitchens, all in a contemporary style with dark colours. The design team at Studio Super Safari delivered on all fronts.
As the homeowners wanted to have two separate kitchens, the design team proposed to relocate the ‘wet’ kitchen to the yard, and carve out a ‘dry’ area which houses the fridge, oven and a bar counter.
The yard is bright and well-ventilated, so this space is perfect for cooking and washing up. Also, when the glass sliding door is closed, it prevents cooking fumes from entering the home.
As a result of this reconfiguration, the home appears much larger and more spacious as the ‘dry’ kitchen feels like an extension of the living room. A wired flyover shelf subtly marks the start of the kitchen without forming an opaque barrier.
Having a cat that spends most of its time in the living area called for scratch-resistant vinyl flooring.
However, the existing timber flooring in the bedrooms was retained and given a darker stain.

For a bold and dramatic look, the walls and even the ceiling of the master bedroom were painted dark grey to evoke a sense of cosiness.
The same dark tone dominates the bathroom with glass and a lighter floor tile bringing a lightness to the space.
The design team added a cement screed wall in the bathroom for a modern industrial vibe.
