Houzz Tour: Industrial-Chic Flat With Many Space-Saving Features
Clever storage ideas and thoughtful space-planning offered this dog-loving family more room in their three-room flat
To accommodate the needs of the family of three and their two pet bulldogs in their three-room flat, interior designer Rick Wong of Crescendo Interior & Lifestyle, had to pull together a few creative solutions. Working with the industrial decor aesthetic in mind, Wong came up with multiple space-saving and storage ideas that were stylish, and maximised every corner of the home.

As having ample storage space was a concern of the homeowners, Wong was tasked to make provision for storage space even in the living room.
Shelving units would have made the space narrower so Wong built storage from floor up – a platform with drawers and various compartments.

The hidden shelving unit is perfect for storing bulky items that don’t need to be accessed on a regular basis. The lightweight sofa and coffee table are easy to move around to gain access.
A sliding door with a powder-coated frame separates the living room from the kitchen. This prevents the cooking fumes from entering the living room and enclosing the living area gives it a cosier feel.
Veering away from the raw, industrial theme, the master bedroom takes on a neutral colour palette. It incorporates a study and a walk-in wardrobe.
The study offers plenty of storage space and the table can be extended if more workspace is needed. When extended, the table is doubly deep and the narrow end on the right becomes usable desktop space for another user.
On the other side of the bedroom is the entrance to the walk-in wardrobe. With a walk-in wardrobe, the room is free of the typical floor-to-ceiling wardrobe cabinetry that can look very bulky.
The integrated walk-in wardrobe is narrow and compact, but it has been fully customised to fulfil the needs of the homeowners.
With much of the living room decked in brown, the homeowners chose a rich shade of red to enliven the kitchen-cum-dining area.
The kitchen is wide enough to house an island which the family use for food preparation as well as a dining table.

A service yard at the back of the kitchen has been turned into a dog washing area, finished in the same cement and wood
The sole bathroom in the flat can be accessed from the kitchen and master bedroom.
Clad in a mix of patterned and cement screed porcelain tiles, the bathroom is also adorned with exposed pipes and black trunking – quintessential of the industrial theme.

The first indication of the theme is the ‘collapsible’ gate at the front door which is both nostalgic and industrial. It swings open and shut rather than ‘collapse’ but the design draws from old-fashioned shop gates.
In the living room, the TV console, door to the bedroom, as well as, the platform, is clad in wood. The different shades add depth and texture to the space.
True to the industrial design aesthetic, the homeowners also went with floor tiles that replicate cement screed.
