Houzz Tour: Light Fills This Scandi-Style One-Bedroom Condo
A pared-down style gives this small abode more breathing room
It was clear from the start that maximising the space of this one-bedroom condo and making it look more spacious was top priority for its bachelorette owner. She had another specific request, though, that needed careful consideration and planning – she wanted a small gym in the house.
She turned to interior designer Keith Ng of The Minimalist Society, to help revamp the unit and come up with a better, brighter layout. “She was particularly interested in the Nordic style and showed us reference photos,” Ng says. With this in mind, Ng created a minimalist Scandinavian home that serves the spatial needs of the owner.

The designer ensured full functionality in this space despite its compact footprint, so the owner can whip up her meals with ease. The bar counter goes double-duty, serving as dining area and prep space.
“The existing living area was dimly lit, which made the space look even smaller,” says Ng. To address this, he replaced the solid partitions around the living area with glass-framed panels to keep the space airy and bright.
Now the living room is awash in natural light, making it a cosy hangout. The grey sofa and fur skin rug also make for an understated yet stylish ensemble.

The glass-framed swing door behind the living area leads to the former study room, which was converted into a mini gym. A full-height mirror – with the large picture windows as a complement – makes the workout area look and feel bigger than it is.
On the other side of the living room, lines are also clean and furnishings are minimal. The matte black wall pops out without veering away from the minimalist style of the whole space.
The designer opted for a barn-style glass sliding door to section off the bedroom. Both the living area and bedroom benefit from the light filtering through the glass, enhancing the overall sense of cosiness.

To bring more function to the once-cramped bedroom, the team built a platform bed with two-tread stairs and under-the-bed storage over the bay window. “We knew that storage space is almost non-existent in other areas of the home, so it was a must to create additional storage in the master bedroom. Instead of making it a simple, normal raised bed frame, we came up with a design that provides a comfortable walkway, ample storage, and a cosy place to rest in after a long day,” Ng says.
A neon sign adds a quirky touch to the predominantly black-and-white sleeping area.
Indeed, from being a dim place that lacks character, this home is now a stylish and functional space that reflects the owner’s vivacious personality.

From the main entry, one is led into the combined dining area and kitchen. Its white and pale wood palette immediately gives a glimpse of the Scandinavian inspiration. Decorative accents, including the cage pendant lamp, chalkboard wall, and a hanging bar to display the owner’s collection of spirits, add personality to this tiny kitchen.
