Houzz Tour: Luxury Meets Modern Resort in This Holiday Home
This apartment for a well-travelled couple is high in style and functionality
“The owners are from Medan, Indonesia. They travel a lot and have several properties in different countries. This unit is their holiday home in Singapore,” says designer Kate Deng of Mr Shopper Studio. She worked on this condo renovation with co-designers Ken Lee and Ben Teo.
“They love Bali and Thailand for their carefree lifestyles, hence would like to bring that similar vibe in this home,” she says. With this in mind, the team conceptualised a modern Balinese resort theme that layers different plush textures for a sleek and sophisticated abode.

Welcoming guests in the main entryway is the owner’s favourite painting. It takes pride of place on the wood strip cladding that forms a canopy over the kitchen. The woodwork also brings continuity to the original contemporary-style kitchen, which was retained, and the rest of the entertaining spaces, where more wood tones abound.
One of the owner’s main requirements was to have sufficient space for his wheelchair-bound father, who occasionally comes to Singapore with the couple. The team responded by creating a custom ceiling-mounted dining table made of black marble top and black powder-coated steel frame. “Mounting it from the ceiling allows it to be stable enough without any legs, creating more floor space to easily manoeuvre the wheelchair around,” says Deng. A custom-made bench with storage underneath also addresses easy seating and storage concerns.

One side of the dining area is finished with a large tinted mirror. “It reflects the dining table, making it look like a long communal table. It also adds some modernity to the theme,” Deng adds.
The living area is a cosy affair, as it brings different textures together – coconut husk cladding on the TV feature wall, black glass for the media storage, wood laminate on the beam and opposite wall. The woven rug and intricate wall decor round off the modern Balinese theme.
The beam was also turned into a lighting feature, adding warmth to the space. Because the area is layered with varied textures, the design team opted for a long, off-white sofa to give the eye a resting point.

Complementing the resort feel is the ceiling decked in Burmese teak. The golden hues of the wood lend rustic charm to the space.

The second bedroom is closed off from the living spaces through sliding doors. Reflective surfaces provide an illusion of bigger space in the wardrobe area.
The stairs lead to the loft bed, another feature by the property developer that was kept.
The loft bed’s wired mesh structure allows the occupant a quick view of the living spaces downstairs.
The modern-luxe feel is continued in the master bedroom, befitting its status as a place for sweet slumber. “We kept the bedroom in monochrome tones,” says Deng. To create depth and dimension, the bedhead wall is finished in laminate strips, while all wardrobe doors are mirrored.
“We also picked Aqua Clean fabrics from Blafink for the headboard and TV feature wall to add softness to the room,” Deng says.
The master bathroom exudes modern sophistication. The pedestal sink adds sculptural interest to the otherwise clean-lined space, while wood-look tiles bring warmth to the space.
