Houzz Tour: Singapore Colonial Meets Scandi Style in This Unit
The designers fulfilled the owners' brief for their double-storey apartment with flair
The newlywed owners called on Sync Interior to renovate their first home, a two-storey apartment in Telok Kurau, with “a simple and minimalist concept”. Designers Eric Chua and Terence Chia worked together to fulfil the brief, which included “functional and practical” in the owners’ wish list – and they added stylish local flavour to the design.
On the first storey of the apartment are the social spaces: a foyer leads to an open-plan living and dining space. Chua says: “In the living room, we made use of the existing sunken structure of the living window area to create a built-in storage cabinet. That is [also] the bar area”.
The designers imported a wood slab from Indonesia which is used for the bespoke, built-in bar top. “The owners do some of their work here as well as chill with friends,” Chua says. “It gets plenty of fresh air and day light”.

The dining area connects to the dry kitchen for the ideal entertaining space, when the owners invite friends and family. There is also a wet kitchen, seen in the reflection of the dining area’s mirror, and used for heavy cooking.
For a seamless flow between the living and dining spaces, and the dry kitchen, the designers overlaid vinyl flooring (they also used this on the second floor). They paired the quartz countertop with a trendy deep green laminate for the kitchen cabinets. The dining table and chairs were custom-made in Indonesia. The owners created the metal-framed open shelving over the kitchen worktop themselves, Chua says.

“We kept the uniqueness of the staircase structure’s design, simply staining the steps and hand railing to a darker wood finish to incorporate the colonial concept,” Chua says.
The colonial inspiration is reminiscent of Singapore’s black and white house and on a smaller scale, Chip Bee Gardens estate built in the 1950s. The walls and ceiling are white, the windows trimmed in black, the wood detailing is dark, and the furniture has a mid century silhouette.

There are two bedrooms and a study room on the second storey.
“In the master bedroom, we built an L-shape wardrobe, and made use of the existing sunken structure under the bedroom window area to create built-in storage cabinet,” Chua says.
A soothing combination of grey and navy complements the neutral base of white walls and dark flooring.

The designers accented the white bathroom with black fittings for a minimalist and timeless design.

One of the bedrooms was converted tino a study and hobby room.
The designers opted to keep the balcony’s existing mosaic floor tiles for its uniqueness and simply decorated it with potted plants.
