Houzz Tour: This First Home is Fearless and Patterned
Measured doses of colour and pattern make for an eclectic first home for a young couple
When it comes to creating your first home as a couple, a BTO (Build-To-Order) flat can be a great place to inject personality and style.
A mint green counter on casters from Crate & Barrel makes a bar counter for quick meals as well as acts as an extension of the kitchen. The fresh colour is echoed in the kitchen cabinets and the pale timber countertop is a clear nod to Scandinavian style.
The book-loving couple wanted to add a reading nook to the living room.
“They really wanted a corner in their living space where they could read and relax,” explain the design team. The nook takes the form of a window seat beside an open bookshelf.

Every inch in the compact kitchen is utilised for storage – base and upper units, open shelving and rails for hanging.
The designers worked with the couple to add bright splashes of colour in the narrow hallway to the bedrooms to “attract the eye”.
The hallway opens into a large dressing room and walk-in wardrobe that was created from two of the four bedrooms.
“The huge space was created by combining two bedrooms,” explains the team.
“The wardrobe occupies a whole corner and includes a small window. We boxed off the sleeping area in order to work with the existing layout and also to cut down on the spaces that need air-conditioning.”
The bed in the master bedroom has been placed on a platform. The bedhead extends around three walls and features a timber laminate laid in a chevron pattern to add to the overall Scandinavian theme say the design team.
Although the two bathrooms were already tiled, the homeowners requested that the team update the look with the same timber-look vinyl flooring and an adventurous floral tile.
The master bathroom off the master bedroom was retiled with a more restrained colour scheme of classic black and white.
Overall, the homeowners are happy and excited about their new eclectic home that fits their personalities and their passions.
