Houzz Tour: This SoHo Condo Attains Elevated Style
Things take a cosy and lofty turn for this previously single-level, shoebox apartment
When the owner of this apartment approached the design team of Distinct Identity, his main requirement was to build a mezzanine to increase the unit’s floor space. The intention was to create a dedicated home office in the first level, and a home space in the second level.
The team went for a black-and-red palette – red being the owner’s favourite colour – to accentuate the modern theme and added a touch of industrial detailing that the owner preferred. The result is a sleek, elegant space that basks in daylight.

Extensive metal work was carried out to construct the mezzanine. Aside from the metal structure that holds the second level, the team also used metal plates, painted black, to form the book shelves. The staircase balustrade features a wire mesh detail, rounding up the industrial theme.
The dining area takes its spot under the mezzanine. Beside it is a kitchenette, which was not updated, as the owner does not cook much.

A double act is seen in the dining area, thanks to a mirrored glass wall that visually enlarges the space. The owner’s existing red dining table, which gives off a beautiful gleam in daylight, is paired with woven rattan chairs with stainless steel legs for textural interest.
The home office is located after the dining area. The glass partition and door permit light to stream in from the full-height living room windows, creating a bright and airy space conducive for work. The cabinets, finished in pale glossy laminate, add to the sleek look.
On display on the second level is the owner’s collection of vintage typewriters. A rotary phone also adds to the nostalgia.
The half-height glass partition on the mezzanine maintains an open visual connection between the two levels.

It also allows the owner to relish the outdoor view when the long drapes are drawn.
To maintain a sense of privacy and distinction from the work spaces, a sliding door was installed to enclose the bedroom. The design team kept furnishings in simple clean lines to enhance the relaxing atmosphere the owner can retire to after a full day’s work.

To highlight the apartment’s best feature – its lofty ceiling – the design team chose linear elements for the living area. The large geometric frame mounted on the black feature wall emphasises the height of the wall. The solid wood TV console also makes a striking statement, with its scaffolding-like design.
To give contrast to the black-and-red scheme, the team changed the flooring to wood laminate. Amidst the linear design are the curvy coffee table and tiered chandelier which bring cosy, modern elegance.
