Ideas we Love: 31 Scrumptious Blue Kitchens
These cook spaces are simply eye candy
When I first started working in food magazines, blue was a no-no colour for food styling – it casts its hue on food to make it look less appetising. In the last five years, however, blue has become a great partner for food. And that’s not just when it comes to food styling or photography. Blue kitchens are becoming quite the rage … and we have some of the best on Houzz to show you:

Location: Berlin, Germany
Why we love it: The tiled backsplash may not look like the highlight of this kitchen – as dark blue cabinets and drawers are equally as bold – but its subtle change of shades adds depth and visual interest.

Location: Cinque Terre, Italy
Why we love it: Light blue tiles with contrasting white grout frame this tiny, one-wall kitchen, and visually connect it with the bathroom (don’t worry, they are separated by a glass door). The contrasting grout and the perfectly lined tiles remind us of our favourite yet dearly-departed cafe, Toast by Marmalade Pantry (which, at one time had pink tiles, and then was renovated with yellow tiles).

Location: Barcelona, Spain
Why we love it: Pale blue tiles on one wall, patterned tiles with blue details, table and bench legs in a muted shade of blue, and blue-grey door frames – everywhere you look in this kitchen, there’s blue. And yet, it isn’t overwhelming. The choice of blue shades and where they appear is so thoughtfully and tastefully done here, that your initial impression is simply: “How fresh!”

Location: Singapore
Why we love it: Blue-grey cabinets give this country-inspired kitchen its cool vibe. It’s almost a neutral, appearing more grey depending on the lighting, yet still benefitting from the cooling effect that the colour blue brings. This is perfect for those who prefer the style-safe look of a neutral palette, yet want to experiment with a little bit of colour.

Why we love it: Who can resist the cheery punch of turquoise the kitchen cabinets bring to this kitchen? It’s like that quintessential summer fragrance, Ralph by Ralph Lauren, in its easy-breezy glory.

Location: Brisbane, Australia
Why we love it: Another blue-grey kitchen, this one is enhanced by the brickwork framing the cooking zone. If you’re a fan of Gordon Ramsay’s Bread Street Kitchen at Marina Bay Sands, the blue-and-brick combo here will remind you of that chic aesthetic.

Why we love it: The semi matt sprayed cabinet doors here have an enamelled effect that pairs beautifully with the brass handles/pulls, shaking up the traditional Shaker look.

Why we love it: How sweet is this powder-blue country-style kitchen? The merest hint of blue is framed by a light grey wall that brings out the moulding detail of both the Shaker-style cabinets and the ceiling.

Location: London, England
Why we love it: A dark teal blue is paired with gorgeously veined marble and stainless steel, and then sharply contrasted with red bar stools that give off an Art Deco feel. It’s very sophisticated yet at the same time, hints of fun.

Why we love it: The baby blue matched with silver cabinet knobs and cup pull handles, marble countertops and patterned tiles exude a sophisticated and toned down Tiffany & Co. effect … it’s almost like having breakfast at Tiffany’s!

Location: Versailles, France
Why we love it: Here’s another Breakfast at Tiffany’s-reminiscent kitchen, albeit with a darker, edgier spin. The handblown glass pendants in the dining room beautifully contrast the harshness of the dark frames of the glass panels separating the two spaces.

Location: Auckland, New Zealand
Why we love it: The sombre-ness of this blue-grey kitchen is balanced by the honey tones of the wood cabinets framing it; its visual bulk cut by the whiteness of the marble slab (which is actually weight-heavy) and cantilevered dining surface. Such a cleverly conceptualised design!

Location: Vancouver, Canada
Why we love it: Open shelving made of the wood planks that contrast with the dark blue under-counter cabinets draw the eye upwards – towards that skylight that promises beautiful natural lighting.

Location: Stockholm, Sweden
Why we love it: Mosaic tiles that you’d normally associate with a swimming pool or shower clad the backsplash all the way to the ceiling, to bring a fresh, colourful twist to an otherwise typically white-and-wood kitchen.

Location: Bristol, UK
Why we love it: The paint colour is Hague blue by Farrow & Ball, the blue Majadas tiles by Bert & May, and the dramatically veined Arabescato Corcia Marble countertops even have a tinge of dark blue. Even more to love about this kitchen – the designer has shared all its details within the photo, for easy reference and inspiration!

Location: Wiltshire, England
Why we love it: This Scandi-inspired English country kitchen has a high ceiling punctuated by its exposed beams and trusses. The light blue cabinets complement the blonde wood surfaces, but what makes it truly airy and clean-lined is the clever, slide-open storage that hides away small appliances.

Location: Charleston, USA
Why we love it: It’s all about the beach – of course – in this beach bungalow kitchen. Flecks of blue appear in the terazzo countertops; blue cabinets and shelving pop out from the pantry further in from the retro two-toned fridge; even the banquette seats are beachy-blue with their wave pattern.

Why we love it: This dry kitchen (you can see the wet kitchen through the French doors) and breakfast nook features two shades of grey-blue, with more grey elements delivered by the breakfast bar and the veining of the Arabescato marble used for the backsplash and countertops.

Location: Frederiksberg, Denmark
Why we love it: Streamlined design and carpentry are why we thought this blue kitchen deserves a spot on this list. Look at the expertly carved, subtle cabinet pulls/handles, and the bevelling of edges, which is especially seen in the corner unit on the left, and the boxed-up cooker hood.

Location: Paris, France
Why we love it: This kitchen is in an open-plan space, which includes dining and living areas. What’s very impressive about it is the consistency of the teal blue – if you look closely, the backsplash is coloured glass, the cabinets are made of a semi-matt enamel-like surface, and the wall is painted. And that teal blue makes such a stylish statement!

Why we love it: A farmhouse-style kitchen in a golf village holiday home, this dark teal blue kitchen is a bold foil to the green view outside. The backsplash is made of handmade Indian tiles, and is framed by the painted wood unit that conceals all the appliances.

Location: Nagoya, Japan
Why we love it: Navy blue cabinetry is paired with solid wood countertops (which give a butcher-block feel), then brightened up by a plain white ceiling and clerestory windows. The overall effect is very streamlined, minimalist yet country-cosy.

Why we love it: Dark blue adds a stylishly sophisticated and edgy twist to the industrial style in this kitchen. The open shelving is almost invisible, making its contents stand out (so that glassware, cooking implements and decor have to be on point!).

Location: Stockholm, Sweden
Why we love it: More blue Shaker goodness; this kitchen has gold-toned hardware (instead of the usual brass); but it’s the chevron-patterned wood floor that adds a warmth to this Scandinavian kitchen.

Why we love it: If you need proof that a dream kitchen can be built inside a Singapore apartment, this blue, Best of Houzz winner, is all you need. The printed tile is an homage to our Peranakan flavours, while the clean-lined, cleverly planned storage is the perfect background for that luxurious island. The dark blue hue is contrasted by white surfaces and the beautiful sheen of brass pendants. To be honest, this kitchen is why this collection of scrumptious blue kitchens exists!
