Interiors that Celebrate the Artistry of Versace
Gianni Versace's opulence and glamour live on in his designs – including interiors
Gianni Versace was the master of boldness and opulence, making his mark both in fashion and interior design. Versace’s in the spotlight again, owing to the new star-studded TV series The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story which premiered on January 18 on FX Asia (January 17 in the US). Let’s take a look at the man and his aesthetic, through the lens of interior spaces:
Who: Giovanni Maria Versace
Born: December 2, 1946, Reggio Calabria, Italy
Died: July 15, 1997, Florida, USA

Young Versace discovered the Medusa on the floor of a ruin in Rome while playing with his siblings and later chose it as his company logo, because of her ability to make people fall in love with her. His intention was for his company to have the same effect on people, thereby using bold bright colours and rich textures to enchant them.
When you think of Versace in your home, consider this: Why should our homes/space be boring or any different? Don’t just like your house, fall in love with your home.

Make a bold statement
The famous, luxurious Versace look is about using bold colours and different textures. Over six different colours are used on this single sofa, in conjunction with silk, velvet, faux fur and metal studs. The key is to ensure that the colours you combine will be pleasing to your eye, and not worry about satisfying others.

Say it with mosaic
The beauty of mosaic is that any design can be achieved. It boils down to the craftsmanship and choice of colour and material.

Rules are meant to be broken
Versace mixed patterns successfully by creating what no other designer at that time had done: gutsy bold interiors that sparked conversation. Contrasting patterns add vibrancy and detail that make a room stand out. Remember, rules can be broken and beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Bring in masculinity
Keep it simple, even as you make it bold! The luxury lies in the trim, metal studs surrounding a bespoke headboard. There is maximum pattern, but the contrast lies within the black and white bold stripe. This adds to the dramatic look.
Tip: Use a flexible element like bedlinen to ‘change up’ your look according to the season/mood. Choose a colour from the room (here black and white stripes) when selecting bedlinen and alternate between dark and light.

Material world
To achieve a ‘furnished room’ without using furniture, select areas and finishes (tiles for example) that can visually occupy the space. Using an antique finish on the mirrors adds to the drama, while contrasting colours represent trims on furniture that ‘should have been used’ in that space. Rich finishes like marble and pearl finishes add to the Versace-approved pure opulence.

Find your balance
The illusion of space can be created by grouping some areas with finishes and furniture, and keeping blank spaces to balance the busy areas. A simple trick to achieve this is by looking at your space ‘through the lens of a camera’. This helps put focus on the balance of space, and allows the eye to rest in certain places. Colour execution will help create a seamless connection.

Bespoke is boss
When choosing finishes and fittings, opt for custom designed items, in order to create exactly what your vision is. Custom-made doors blend in beautifully with the black trim and bevelled mirror. Versace was famous for using loads of mirrors not only to create the illusion of space, but also to add drama.

Details matter
A luxury condo apartment inspired by the late Gianni Versace features his bold use of colour, rich materials and finishes, as well as the famous Greek key found in the company logo. If the aesthetic of the home is bold and rich, why should the kitchen be different? Include the same richness to reflect the theme.
