It's in the Details: Bathroom Accessories Complete the Look
Tiles and fittings set the theme for a bathroom, but it's the fixtures and little accessories that finish it
Bathroom fittings – your toilet, bathtub and washbasin – are major elements that set the look of your bathroom, together with your tile selection. Bathroom fixtures – your taps, showers and drains – and accessories such as toilet roll holders and towel racks complete it. Mixing and matching is second nature to a designer, whereas homeowners can easily select good but clashing fixtures and accessories. Let these 10 looks inspire and teach you how to ensure your bathroom details work.
2. The luxe factor
The Victorian design of this bathroom is reflected by the intricate details of the brushed brass fixtures and accessories. The floral base of the towel ring and hook thoughtfully matched by the toilet roll holder and drawer pull, and complements the geometric-floral pattern of the printed tiles.

3. Brass-y charm
The four-room flat is a fusion of industrial and modern luxe styles, says designer Alvin Ling of The Scientist. The bathroom reflects the industrial aspect with its subway tiles, but the black framed shower enclosure and black fittings are more evocative of modern luxe. The brass fixtures and carefully matched pendant light finish the look with a vintage flourish.

4. Contrasting colour
Black fixtures contrast with the light-toned marble and wood elements of this luxurious bathroom. These are echoed by the bold black lines of the window frame, Venetian blinds, mirror edging and towel rack.

5. Geometric progression
While the black and white tiles and white fittings vs. black fixtures may be the initial details that catch your eye in this bathroom, there’s a subtle yet interesting aspect in this design. Note the shapes of the washbasin (trapezoid), mirror (circle), showerhead (square), and see how these add a playful touch to a monochromatic design.

6. Plane and simple
Cher Ming Tan, principal of Ming Architects, describes the design of the landed house as “contemporary with a focus on practicality”. With the darker hues of the marble used in this smaller bathroom, it makes sense to use fixtures in the form of flat planes to make the most of the limited space.

7. Naturally inclined
Designed together with its architect-owners, this 5-room flat is Scandi-inspired in theme, yet decorated with travel mementoes from Southeast Asia. This is reflected in the warm wood used throughout the house – including this guest bathroom. The black powder-coated steel frames of the door, shower enclosure and vanity are echoed by the black tap and lamps, and the black grouting used with the subway tiles. Bamboo laminate was used for the vanity surfaces, and its warm finish matches the mirror’s frame.

With a “glam industrial” theme throughout the house, according to Arjan Nijen Twilhaar, principal designer of Aiden T, the bathroom plays up the glam bit with its marble vanity, marbled tiles and gold hardware. The moulded details of the fixtures and accessories – note the towel ring and door handle – give that old school romantic-era look, while the geometric mirror adds an Art Deco update.
