Kitchen Tour: Condo Cookspace Goes Country
The owners' travel buys and fascination with barn doors take this Singapore cookspace to a different dimension
Despite its suburban location, proximity to other medium-rise condominiums makes this home unmistakably a city dwelling. But you’d never feel that once you step into the kitchen. The farmhouse look is so authentic, you’d expect pigeons roosting in the rafters!
“As an avid baker, the owner has a lot of baking equipment. She loves to collect vintage pots, pans and baking equipment when she travels as well as signage and memorabilia. She is a huge fan of vintage, well-used and well-loved kitchen items. She also required the island to have plenty of storage for her rice pot, kitchen items and cookbooks”, Teo says.
The owners also like barn doors and asked Teo to incorporate these in the design.

To achieve the distressed look of barn doors for the cabinetry, Teo used pine wood that was white-washed, wire-brushed, stained and finished with a clear lacquer. Plywood and metal elements make up the detailing of the top cabinets, while handles are a mix of reclaimed and imported metal and leather handles from Vietnam. Red ceramic tiles on the worktops complete the warm, old-fashioned look.
Faux rafters were handcrafted using pine wood that was beaten, wire-brushed, stained and then sanded. “All to give a real representation of rustic beams”, Teo says.

Teo collaborated with the owner on the most efficient layout for her cooking-cum-baking style, as well as to fit her collection. “The owner specified the layout she needed for the stove and sink area as well as the island position. The rest was entirely up to us”, Teo says.
To create a harmonious ambience, Teo also worked on the design and execution of the dining room, which features many more pieces of the owner’s collection.
