Kitchen Tour: Transnational Family's Eclectic Country-Style
For this Aussie and Singaporean family, only a merger of their cultures will do for the heart of their home
When the Australian husband and Singaporean wife moved back to her home country from his, they brought with them the habit of easy, Sunday roast-style entertaining. So for their HDB 5-room flat, a hard-working kitchen that opened out to the dining area was in order.
Victor Ting and his team at The Carpenter’s Workshop designed the apartment to be a reflection of the couple’s cross-cultural background, with the kitchen being the ultimate melting pot with its Peranakan tiles and farmhouse style details.

Pocket sliding glass doors replaced a wall so that cooking aromas can be contained when necessary, but for the most part, the kitchen and dining area share an easy-breezy flow. An island was built perpendicular to a wall, separating the prep-and-cook spaces from fridge and pantry.
To create the country look, the design team clad barn door-styled cabinet fronts in wood veneer, matching the barn door of the pantry. For a dose of Singapore flair, they used Peranakan tiles for the backsplash. Quartz was used for the worktops.
The country style, says Ting, was reinterpreted “through the materials and items loved by the lady of the house, in an eclectic way.”

The designers weaved together muted colours, the couple’s eclectic collection of kitchen accessories, and quirky accessories sourced online from different parts of the world, creating a cosy, harmonious cook space that’s ever-ready for entertaining.
