Mesmerising Monochromes: Uncover the Magic of Black and White
Put the brakes on colour and dress your interior for success with this timeless and elegant combo
Black and white is one of those effortless combinations that works in most design schemes – from Scandinavian, to classic to minimalist and contemporary cool. Check out these awesome homes that do monochromes justice – each one different in its style yet unified in its chic colour palette.
Add a dash of tan for a sophisticated break in a mostly monochromatic scheme
Just as a chic, leather handbag can add that finishing touch to a smart designer outfit, a gorgeous tan leather sofa is a naturally perfect accompaniment in this space.
There’s something decidedly handsome and yet understated about tan leather in a monochromatic interior. I love how the rich colour of the tan leather just gives this black and white space a burst of richness without overpowering the space.

Splash out in black for a dark chic appeal
Not many homes do black well because let’s face it, it’s a very dark shade. This daring space however certainly defies convention and does it well.
I love how this space is drenched in black – floor, bookshelves and even the furniture.
While it’s not a look that many can take, this fashion-forward home certainly ticks all the right boxes in my mind, without appearing self-admiring or claustrophobic because of the extremely high ceilings and the amazing artwork that adds a much needed burst of personality.

Balance dark and white surfaces well
I love the way the black ceiling in this dining room flows into the black bookshelves. It clearly separates the space from the pristine, light-filled living room beyond while bringing intimacy to the room. It’s the perfect combination of yin and yang in my opinion.

Make a statement with black furniture in an otherwise neutral room
I absolutely love black and white when it’s teamed with light wood. There’s something sublime about this Scandinavian-inspired home because it strikes the right balance between dark and light, while allowing the dark pieces to really pop.
The typography artwork also adds a personalised touch that completes the simple room perfectly.

Add a decadent touch with a four-poster bed in a large room
Nothing spells luxury like a big old classic four-poster bed done in sleek, minimalist design lines.
Unlike its predecessor which was usually a chunky wooden giant, these modern streamlined newbies in jet black can instantly imbue a master bedroom with luxury.
What I’ve found on my travels and overall experience reporting on interiors is that a jet black four-poster is all you need in a large room to make a space stunning. Team it with either crisp whites for a hotel finish or charcoal bedding for a masculine take.
Either way, this black beauty will be a worthwhile investment for years to come.

Candy stripe your walls for a playful take at home
Stripes are a really good way of introducing pattern into a space, and this diagonal feature wall really gives this home its winning touch.
You can even do this for the bathroom walls and floor for an avant-garde touch. It may not be for the pattern-shy but it’s certainly a head-turning idea.

I first fell in love with these floor tiles in the comedy series, ‘The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air’.
That said, my taste has evolved very much since those days. It’s a very American style and doesn’t necessarily work in more modern spaces but this gorgeous living room wears the combination so well.
I love how the other surfaces are kept soft so the glossy, graphic flooring becomes the hero in this space.
It also works really well with the grillwork on the clerestory windows that mirrors the pattern perfectly.
