Modern Icons: Eames Molded Plastic Rocker
If you could only have one piece of iconic modern furniture, what would you pick? For me it would be an Eames Molded Plastic Rocker. I visualize this chair as a cartoon character who's the life of the party— he makes people smile, dances like a goofball and always has a good time.
These cheerful chairs make my neighbor Lilly's front porch so inviting. They also hint at the unexpected modern interior and addition on this old converted dairy barn.
Doesn't it look like these three chairs are having a chat? The wooden chair is a little uptight, the pink Series 7 chair has the giggles, and the Eames rocker is cracking her up even more.
The Eames designed the chair in 1948 for Herman Miller. There was a 30 year gap where it was no longer in production, but now the licensed design has made a major comeback.
The chair is also known as the RAR (Rocking Armchair Rod). The chair has an Eames Eiffel base and rocks on maple glides.
I think the reason this chair makes me smile is because it looks like it's on skis. I have these visions of someone using it like a sled.

It seems like just yesterday I was reading one of my favorite blogs, sfgirlbybay, and she was excited about the arrival of her rocker.
She doesn't even live here anymore, but I loved watching her move it around during her constant re-arrangements in her apartment, and now around her new place!
