Room of the Week: A Modern Kitchen With the Right Touch of Scandi
A pantry that opens to expose shelving and closes to present a bold statement is the hero of this modern kitchen
In a Q&A format, we talk to the designers – and examine the creative thinking – behind some of Houzz’s most loveable rooms.
Brief
A clean, simple palette with a crisp look. The client’s wish list said they wanted the space to feel a bit larger, while grounding the open-plan living area.

Starting point
To ground and define the kitchen within the space, the ceiling was lowered and made flat to contrast with the vaulted ceiling of the adjacent living areas. It was then warmed up using oak veneer and vertical LED lighting inside cabinetry to lengthen and highlight the space.

Key design aspects
Colour palette: Warm neutrals.
Materials palette: The benchtops are 80-millimetre thick Tristone in Milk Grotto. The sink bowl is a Picassi Gino-544 Dekton Sirius from Cabro. The doors are Prime Laminate’s Surrender in white Soft-Matt and black Soft-Matt.
The pantry shelves and buffet cupboard, ceiling and rangehood box are in a planked and wire-brushed oak veneer. We used aluminium Gola extrusion powder-coated handles, and Franke tapware.

Key pieces of furniture/fittings: The pantry is hidden behind a Hafele Hawa Concepta sliding-door system. When the doors are closed they are flush with the adjacent cabinets and the sharp black matt gives the room weight and makes a bold statement while grounding the kitchen.
When the doors are opened there is full access to the cabinetry below and the shelves above. The shelves give the owners easy access to everyday items.

Thinking behind the arrangement of furniture/fixtures
To provide functionality while integrating the remaining living areas, including the large alfresco entertaining space.

Challenges you worked around
Creating a crisp look without it feeling cold and making the space feel larger while also grounding the kitchen area.

Why do you think this room works?
It is a fully functional, aesthetically beautiful and integrated living space. We incorporated timber highlights throughout the kitchen to break up the white and black, and to add visual interest. The same timber veneer was used in other areas of the home to pull the cabinetry elements together.
