Room Tour: A Bachelor Pad's Lounge-Style Living Room
With his flat in the central business district, the owner wanted a chill-out space that reflected his urban jungle surrounds
You’d never guess that this expansive-looking, lounge-like space was the living room of a HDB flat. It has a floor-to-ceiling ‘view’ of the San Francisco night skyline, swanky sunken seating, and a fully kitted-out home theatre. The design brief, says Brendan Tang, a representative of The Interior Place, was actually “to create a modern living room without the conventional way of storage cabinets” for a living room that functions primarily as a cosy entertainment space.
The approach to the living room is past the eat-in kitchen, stepping onto the acrylic-clad, 200mm-high platform. LED (light-emitting diodes) strips beneath it give it the appearance that it’s floating, while a geometric cutout in its centre makes way for carpeted sunken seating. A backlit, dropped ceiling in the same shape above the sunken seating makes the dark-hued ceiling appear higher than it actually is.
Building on the geometric cuts of the floor and ceiling, the TV feature wall also has its own geometric panels.
A higher platform as well as a bay window seat were also built in varying heights, and finished in the same material finish as the main platform.

“The floating platform is actually designed so that it caters for storage space in some parts of the platform area,” Tang says. Likewise, the carpeted backrest of the sunken seating area also features hidden cabinets, keeping the sleek, swanky living room uncluttered at all times.

“The owner wanted that urban jungle feel so we looked for a large format digital printer to print out the cityscape of San Francisco and applied it as wallpaper,” Tang says. Creating a platform that functions as seating with concealed storage cabinets allowed for the illusion of floor-to-ceiling ‘windows’.
