This bedroom makeover in a rental condo – a “Design in A Day” project by Arete Culture – was a birthday gift from a mum to her daughter who was turning twelve. The stylist in charge, Nirvi Metta, shares that the girl and her mum had a few practical requests. “She didn’t want a princess-y, girly bedroom but something more grown-up. She also wanted us to create more space to give her more room to practise things like dance. And finally, she wanted a tall mirror so she can check her outfits before heading out,” Metta says.
Noting her favourite colours (teal and fuschia) and other design preferences, Metta and the Arete Culture team set out to create a bright and airy space that the young resident would be happy to hang out in.

Room at a Glance: Bedroom
Who lives here: An about-to-turn-twelve girl
Location: Thomson Lane
Size of room: 108 square feet (10 square metres)
Stylist in charge: Nirvi Metta
Reorganising the spatial flow of the room was the first order of business. “The window ledge was previously used as a storage space for books. We customised a window seat cushion and added throw pillows to create a functional and cosy seating area for her to use,” Metta says.

Her old bed with a pullout was replaced with a new one, which has a tall cushioned headboard that’s perfect for reading in bed. The intricately-patterned nightstand from her old room was repurposed but paired with a new lamp.
“When she came to our showroom, she saw our marble accessories and was really into the marble effect,” shares Metta. Thus, they chose this new lamp with a marble look and a contrasting linen shade for a touch of grown-up glamour.
A full-length mirror in a bamboo-look frame was also added, as well as a cool stool. “We chose everything with longevity in mind so the room will remain in style for years to come and will be able to grow with her changing needs and design preferences,” says Metta.

Her parents bought a new simple and versatile study table.
“Because she likes plants and candles, we also brought in faux plants (for easy maintenance) and a scented reed diffuser for that lingering room fragrance,” Metta says.

To better organise her book collection, her old teal-coloured shelf was swapped out for a new bookshelf in a wood finish. Ledges were put up above her study table, so now she has ample space for display and storage of her craft materials and stationery.
Metta explains that the girl’s fondness for crafts, particularly weaving dreamcatchers, became the inspiration for the entire look.
“We focused on incorporating lots of natural, organic elements in the room,” she says. The neutral-toned rug was chosen for added softness without overwhelming the space. Colourful tassels were also added into the mix for texture and fun, “because it was important that we still make it feel like the bedroom was designed for a kid,” she concludes.
