Room Tour: A Bold, Dramatic and Versatile Master Suite
This hardworking haven proves limited space is no issue when creating a functional and cohesive room
Bedrooms have become more than just a place to sleep and rest. This master bedroom in a five-bedroom executive condominium is one of them, having been transformed into a versatile and stylish space, where sleeping, working, and dressing up can be carried out with ease. Designers Alvin Ling and Shyn Sum of The Scientist responded to the owners’ request for a cosy retreat that meets different needs.
“They didn’t want the room to be too bright. They were looking for an elegant and glamorous look,” the designers say. Therefore, they went dramatic through a dark palette against the honey-toned parquet flooring.
The accent wall was painted in a chalkboard-like shade with greenish undertones (Flint Black by Nippon Paint). The dark colour pops out even more against the cool grey shade used for the rest of the surfaces. This together with a customised black bed, captures the bold and glam mood.
Adding an eclectic flavour to the room are the Ferroluce Retro Country pendant lamps, and a pair of bedside lamps with shiny gold bases. Velvet grey curtains bring another level of cosiness to the space.

The bed faces the work desk, which is another feature required by the owners, as they sometimes work from home. The placement of the desk within the wardrobe space signals the demarcation between the sleeping area and the work/dressing area.
To tie the whole look together, the designers picked out a desk in similar wood tones to the flooring.

“The wardrobe is finished in black ash wood-look laminate with rose gold trim around the edges, to create a defined detail to the dark-toned cabinetry,” say the designers. They also carved out a niche for the printer, books, and other knick-knacks. And lastly, a full-length mirror rests against the wardrobe, to make dressing up a breeze.

The first thing the designers addressed was the tight space. “The owners wanted more wardrobe space, so it became the inspiration for the space planning,” the designers say. They merged the original master bedroom and the adjacent bedroom to expand the footprint.
A narrow passageway was created by placing a row of full-height wardrobe parallel to the wall. Upon entering the room, an eye-catching vignette of a midnight blue wing chair, a vibrant flamingo artwork, and a handmade rug from Iran makes for a luxuriously cosy welcome.
