Room Tour: A European-Style Living Room With Island Views
Just because your home is the tropics, doesn’t mean you can’t indulge in your taste for classic European style
Room at a glance: Living-dining room
Who lives here: A young professional couple and their daughter
Location: Keppel Road
Designer in charge: Andre Meeuwis for Sugarbakers
One of the key features to achieving the look was to create the high ceiling integral to their design inspiration.
To do this in the condo, Sugarbakers had to remove the existing air-conditioning ducting and replace it with a more slimline version in order to raise the ceiling to the maximum height.
This immediately added volume to the room and set the scene for the European villa decor.

Meeuwis felt the walls needed to be warm in tone, but not too dark for the smaller space, so he chose Designer Grey from Dulux Paints as the main colour with Chinchilla White as an accent shade.
To bring in more European references, Meeuwis designed a series of wainscoting panels trimmed in white to highlight spaces and to add texture.

Adding large scale artwork to the design scheme was important to create the slightly ‘over-stuffed’ Victorian feel.
This oil painting by renowned South African artist Brian Rolfe was commissioned for this space. He was briefed by the interior firm to create a picturesque scene. The final painting depicts a view of a pond in the French countryside featuring a stone villa surrounded by trees.
On either side of the painting sit a pair of large, gently curved mirrors set into carved panels in French White to create a trompe l’oeil effect – literally to ‘deceive the eye’ in French – of large windows.

A deep blue velvet sofa with stud detailing stands out in the lounge area. The cushion fabrics were selected to remind the family of similar ones they had seen in Paris and Rome.

Though they loved the noise and colour on their doorstep, they wanted their home to be an oasis of classic, opulent Victorian style.
Avid and regular travellers to Europe, the couple had fallen in love with this elegant style and wanted to recreate the same formal elegance specifically in their living area.
“We worked closely with the clients, doing our best to incorporate the ideas they brought back with them from their trips to Europe,” explains Jas Jhol of Sugarbakers.
“They are in love with Victorian style, so we had to interpret this concept for a living room in tropical Singapore.”
