Room Tour: A Living Room That Sings Cheerfully
Garden-fresh hues make this sun-drenched space a delight to relax and entertain in
Finding the perfect balance between joyful and tranquil was the key to this project, says Nikki Hunt of Design Intervention. The homeowners came to her firm because of its reputation for using colour boldly – they particularly wanted bright yellows, pinks and oranges in their home. “Too bright, and the room would look like a children’s playroom,” Hunt says. With a deft hand, she balanced the happy hues with soothing neutrals and loads of texture. The result is a striking, colourful space that’s both fresh and restful.
Before guests enter the living room, a bright yellow console at the entrance of the apartment tips them off on things to come. Custom-designed and built onto the wall, it’s a bold contrast to the leopard-print wallpaper. Hunt intended for its asymmetric lines and vibrant hue to clue guests in on the fun elements beyond.
And indeed, there’s joyous fun in this space while maintaining the room’s sophistication. A chandelier of 16 golden trumpets regales over the bright yellow sofa, hot pink cushions and coral slipper chairs.
The coffee table and half-height cabinet for storing books and photo albums were designed with sleek, clean lines and polished steel to ground the exuberance of the other elements.

“We selected an ombre design for the curtains and the backs of the dining chairs (not pictured) to give the feel of sunshine streaming in. They impart a fresh and casual feel,” says Hunt.
The designer also styled vignettes of the owners’ collection of small art pieces throughout the space, further infusing it with the owners’ personal touch.

A neutral background was crucial to setting up the space for its bold shots of colour. Hunt identified the neutral elements as the beige marble floor with a checkered cowhide rug and a soft champagne gold-on-white leopard-print wallpaper. “The pattern is very subtle, almost tone on tone, and gives just an added layer of texture,” she says.
