Room Tour: A Pod in a Bedroom
A boxy strategy helped this room evolve into a practical and purposeful space
Bedrooms have come a long way from being solely devoted to sleeping and dressing up. It is now common to see them as multi-tasking spaces, performing lounging and home-office duties as well. This bedroom in a terrace house clearly shows how a sleeping quarters can come alive in form and function.
“The client, who works in finance, came to us requesting a warm, clean and modern sanctuary to work, rest and relax in,” says Biyi Oh, design director of Proj. B Studio. The team came up with a unique and creative solution for the owner’s design brief: a ‘storage box’ inserted into a pod-like relaxation niche to naturally segregate the three key areas within the amply sized bedroom.
The designers took the owner’s initials – W and Y – to create a subtle geometric pattern for the cabinet doors. “This adds a personalised touch to the room’s design,” says Oh.
Different storage compartments were integrated into the cabinetry to give the owner plenty of options for storing and displaying his things. The dark laminate used in the cabinets and study desk tie in with the dark-stained parquet flooring.
White laminate was used for the exterior of the storage box to match the bedroom’s white walls, whereas dark wood laminate defined the relaxation niche. The playful linear pattern is continued up to the ceiling, while the dark wood laminate flooring unifies the palette.
Oh designed the closet in the same monochromatic concept to harmonise with the rest of the space. The simple rectangular details on the sliding doors add interest.
The owner wanted his bed on the floor, Japanese-style. This enhances the minimalist yet cosy ambience of the room.

“We thoroughly love this project, from the design process, to the detailing, and even to the tedious construction. We have to thank the extremely patient and skilful carpenter who painstakingly crafted every bit of the room on his own,” shares Oh.

The owner gave the team free rein on the design. His only request was to use dark timber for cosiness, yet make the room bright and spacious. “Hence, we went for a play of contrast between white and dark timber,” says Oh.
