Room Tour: It's A Double Act For This Family Room
Pleasing to both adults and child, this versatile and contemporary room makes a great hang-out
What used to be a storage space in this black and white bungalow has been transformed into a charming room where a family of three can quality time together. “The owners wanted a double-purpose area without being too kid-orientated. It was to be a family room with child-friendly elements, and it needed to be gender-neutral, should they have more children,” says designer Chlöe Elkerton of boutique design firm E & A Interiors.
“The couple, especially the wife, was very involved in the selection process of the furnishings. She contributed to the decisions in the colour scheme, fabric choices, as well as in the accessories for the room,” says Elkerton. Together, they set out to achieve a versatile design that can be appreciated by the whole family, and that can be adapted as the son grows up and his preferences change.

A small alcove by the door holds a little sitting area. The A-shaped shelf – after the initial of the couple’s child – and paper ball lantern lights add a fun and personalised touch to the nook.
Occupying one wall is a bespoke built-in TV unit, which features mirrored panels for the child to enjoy. Striped baskets are tucked into the bottom shelves for neat toy storage. “With shelves at different heights, the couple are also able to display some photo frames and objects out of the child’s reach,” says Elkerton.
Covering most of the floor space is a low bespoke sofa. “The different parts can be stacked together, to allow for more play space,” Elkerton says. The rounded corners also keep bumps and bruises at bay.
Accessories such as colourful door handles, a teepee, and a fox head on the wall, bring playful elements to the design.

Rounding up the animal theme is this koala side table. “The son really loves koalas so this was a great addition. It is small and low enough to work with the sofa, and also adds another element of fun,” the designers says.
A dresser in mustard brightens up the other end of the room, and makes for a good spot for more quirky display.

The room’s gender-neutral, soft pastel palette was mainly inspired by a Molly Mahon star and spot wallpaper, which the owners liked from the firm’s wallpaper selection. It became the perfect backdrop for the room’s relaxed and inviting feel.
A variety of textures and patterns enlivens the space. Different patterns, from stripes to hexagons to spots, in soft yellows, blues and greens are seen in the fabrics and accessories. “Only natural materials were used – the rug is in a divine bamboo silk, while the sofa covers and accessories are in cotton and linen,” says Elkerton.
