The Apartment's Classroom Makeover is Uplifting ... Under the Sea
In this episode, the contestants have to transform tired classrooms into low-budget yet highly stimulating learning hubs

After an emotional Design Court in the previous episode, The Apartment judge-mentor Tyler Wisler told the contestants that this episode’s challenge was just what they needed. He took them to Sri Ara International School, located in a colonial black-and-white compound in Johor Bahru. The school building, Tyler said, was built in 1932, and the school didn’t have much budget to renovate the classrooms. The contestants, still split into three groups, were to makeover a classroom for the clients – the kids who learn in that room.
Room at a Glance: Classroom
Who is it designed for: Primary 2 students
Designers: Seron and Chantal
Seron and Chantal, who lost teammate Melissa in the previous episode, were off to a rocky start. But the girls focused on their clients – a class of primary 2 boys – and made the students’ ideas their priority.
After a consultation with Dulux Colour Expert Arlene Tablan, who challenged the contestants to use “the power of colour in transforming a space”, Seron and Chantal went to work on turning their classroom into an underwater adventure.

After a consultation with Dulux Colour Expert Arlene Tablan, who challenged the contestants to use “the power of colour in transforming a space”, Seron and Chantal went to work on turning their classroom into an underwater adventure.
“We realised that our kids were really quite intelligent; they wanted to read more, they wanted to create artwork and things. They showed us these big drawings that they did themselves, so we just wanted to incorporate that into our space,” Seron said.
Chantal, in particular, was encouraged by the boys and the under-the-sea theme. “I’m a swimming teacher, so children and water, they’re both my element.”

They painted the walls three shades of blue for depth, with ‘sand’ at the bottom of the walls. Tyler even helped them finish the sand-to-sea transition by sponging the colour edges. The girls then took the Dulux stencils to another level by adding their own highlights and shadows, which Tyler later commended them on.
The girls also used stimulating black-and-white stripes with blocks of red for contrast, which they placed in a cosy reading corner.
“What I liked about this room… the minute you walk into this room, you’re just so happy,” judge Cat Arambulo-Antonio said.
More importantly, when the students walked into the newly transformed classroom, “they made us feel better because they were all ‘yay, woo!’”, Seron said.
The Apartment airs Wednesdays and Thursdays, 8pm (SGT), on Diva.
