Embarking on a kitchen remodel is both an exciting and daunting endeavour for most people. My goal as a kitchen designer is to guide my clients through the multitude of decisions that need to be made. To begin, I always ask what they envision in their dream kitchen. Not surprisingly, there is a universal chorus on their requirement list, unlike their wish list, which is diverse and based on their specific desires. Read on to find the most requested kitchen must-haves in the US.
1. Islands
It may not surprise you that the most common request I hear from a new client is for a kitchen island. It’s very typical for people to dream of an island that’s the focal point of their kitchen and is big enough for food preparation, extra storage and seating, like the one shown here.
However, not all kitchens are large enough to accommodate the ideal work aisle clearances of 42 inches for a single cook or 48 inches for a two-cook kitchen. Fortunately for those island dreamers out there with small kitchens, there are other options.

Long and narrow
One option is to rethink the depth of your island. Not all islands are meant to have seating. Some simply function as another work surface with perhaps a bit of storage below. In this photo, the combination butcher block and stainless steel island adds a warm yet industrial element to a grey transitional-style kitchen. Itty bitty
Remember, as nice as it is to have a large island, you won’t enjoy all that extra counter space if it’s difficult to walk around the kitchen. A key component of getting your island right is the work aisle clearances. Sometimes the space you have means only the smallest of centre islands will do.

2. Large single sink
I’d say that 98 percent of my clients request a single-basin sink that is 30 to 33 inches wide and 9 inches deep. What makes the single basin all the rage? Most of my clients comment that their current double sinks cannot fit large pots and pans – and that drives them crazy!

3. More prep space
Most older kitchens are smaller and designed for one cook, with the prep area limited to the space directly next to the sink. Today, kitchens are often larger, and it is not uncommon to have two cooks in the kitchen, necessitating the need for more than one prep area.
The prep space should be a section of continuous countertop at least 36 inches wide and 24 inches deep immediately next to the sink for a primary preparation/work area. One option for a secondary prep location is a peninsula, as shown in this photo. Here, the peninsula also doubles as a serving station, since it is accessible to the dining room.

Tall cabinet with roll-out shelves
One of my favourite ways to add storage is a tall cabinet with adjustable roll-outs that matches the new cabinetry. You don’t have to guess what’s behind the first row of supplies – simply roll out the shelf to see.

Reconfigure a closet
If your kitchen plans don’t include space for a new walk-in pantry, you might consider repurposing a nearby closet to act as your pantry. Add shelves – or, even better, roll-outs – to the interior of the closet. Also consider adding a new door with glass, as shown, to delineate the new pantry from other closets.

One option is to have both an eat-in nook with a table and a countertop bar, as shown here.

Rereading the comments has ben helpful. I also have a very large, very deep utility sink with hot and cold water in the basement. Next time I'm taking that french roasting pan down there and not trying to wedge it in to my porcelain single sink where it will scratch the finish. Also it is hard to avoid getting water on the floor. My other option sometimes has been to carry such things outside, use boiling water to help heat them and scrub them on a concrete back porch. Very large cooking pots tend to be difficult to clean inside. If I ever remodeled I would get an absolutely gigantic kitchen sink and just use dishpans to conserve water for small jobs.
It's fun looking at all the kitchen ideas and reading what you all have to say. They are so beautiful. A lot of my ideas came from various articles from Houzz. When I moved into my home 2 years ago the home was in terrific shape. The kitchen though was all oak cabinets, rather dark, especially one end of the kitchen, plus slightly dated. It bothered me how dark it looked. I had it painted white and installed quartz counters in white with the look of carrera marble. I knew the trouble with maintaining the real thing and didn't want to stress myself out while cooking, I'm one of those messy cooks! I put in white subway back splash tiles with high shine for the brightness they add. I replaced 4 kitchen cabinet doors with glass ones for added lightness. The kitchen floors are oak as is the entire house. There was a trash compactor that I didnt want (another story) so had a wine rack installed and the space looks like it was designed just for it. I am in wine country here! I changed out the flouscent kitchen light fixture with simple flush mount ceiling lights and put in a simple black chandalier in breakfast room. and 3 small black hanging lights over the peninsula... The kitchen hardware is all black. My window treatments are roman shades in black and white toile as are the breakfast room chair seats. Jeletta, what ever works for you as far as size. I found a wonderful island on Craigslist for a steal. It is big and solid (very heavy) in an unidentified hardwood with lots more storage. A kitchen is not meant to do a lot of walking. It's a work space. I've used my island so much and would never ever do without it. I have about 3 feet all around it for walking and it is quite adequate. What a difference in this kitchen with no more dark areas. It even looks happy! Thanks Houzz for all those wonderful ideas you send our way. You send our own creative juices on a safari to take something, add to it a little here and there and make it our own. Thank you.
By the way Cora, I'm with you, I got a big kitchen sink, no deviders for me. Turkey pans come on in! I absolutely love it!
So true that sharp edges on islands are hazardous. So too are sharp-edged and cornered handles on cupboards and drawers, especially below-counter ones. Ditto for handles that have a protrusion past the parts that attach to the cabinet/drawer. Those protrusions are also an excellent way to grab and rip clothing.
