What's Your Living Room Style?
Can't put your finger on what style is for you? The following examples will help you decide on one, or even a delightful combo
I’m not terribly in to fashion, but I sure like style. Sometimes, however, its hard to pinpoint what kind of style we like and are comfortable with – and with all the different types of living room styles floating out there, it can be hard to select just one. That’s when pairing up different styles can really work. We don’t always fall into a category that defines us and our sense of style – and if we did it may be a bit on the boring side long-term. That’s why I love hybrid styles like “beach cottage” or “modern farmhouse” – styles that pair together beautifully and give a bit of flexibility to your styling.
If you are wondering what sort of style fits you like a glove – then feast your eyes on the selection below. If you find yourself instantly gravitating to a certain living room image – that just might be your perfect match. The key to finding the right fit for you is something that expresses part of your personality and that you find welcoming and inviting. After all, the living room is where a lot of us spend our time kicking back – so it’s worth investing a bit of thought and time into your living space.

Soft Traditional. You like the finer things in life – but prefer to steer clear of stainless-steel finishes and the minimalist approach. You like it old-school, but refined, welcoming and comfortable in nature. Think Downton Abbey, but with a touch of today.
Sophisticated calm. You like things classy, but fuss free. Casual elegance is your mantra and you like to play around with a grey or stone colour palette. You like a touch of modern, but lots of soft furnishings for comfort.
Eclectic and quirky. You’re not afraid of bright and sometimes mismatching colour schemes and patterns. You like to mix things up and keep them interesting – with often dazzling results. If anything can make something look good – you can.
Coastal cottage. You like things that look pretty – but not too pretty. A muted colour palette paired with neutrals is the look for you. You like to mix a bit of cottage style with coastal chic to keep your living room looking quaint, comfortable and easy on the eye.
Classic colour. You like punchy accents, but don’t like your interior to scream it from the roof tops. You’re not shy of bold primary colours, or of pairing them together, as long it is done tastefully.
Scandinavian notes. Sure, you like items that look attractive, but you are a modern individual and don’t like things to be cluttered or overtly streamlined. You like to soften your modern style with soft colours and indoor plants.
Bohemian rustic. You are an artistic soul who loves the look and feel of the country. You like the simple life, but also enjoy the comforts of the modern age. You may collect both fresh eggs and vintage vinyl.
Modern farmhouse. You like the warmth and texture that a rustic home provides, but also like to keep it today with polished surfaces and contemporary decor.
Beach chic. You love to spend time by the sea and naturally gravitate towards neutral tones and mixed textures that evoke the colour and feel of sand and natural stone. You like to keep your style chilled – just like a day on the beach.
Tropical. You don’t believe that enjoying holiday time should take up the least amount of time in your calendar – which is why you like to recreate that feeling of relaxed abandonment throughout the whole year.
Laid-back and open. You don’t like to feel boxed in by a room and prefer an open and airy space. You prefer not to follow the trends – you choose what you like, not what’s in fashion.
Homely Mid-century. You love to peruse the local second-hand markets for those special finds, but aren’t adverse to the old designer piece as well. You like to throw different styles together – basically you like what you like and will find a way to work it in.
Retro fun. You love anything that looks like it came straight from the ‘60s and ‘70s. Brightly coloured soft furnishings, interesting lamps and feature furniture pieces are your happy place. You might even be prone to using the word “groovy” in a sentence.
Vintage. You like pastels, soft finishes and like to have freshly cut flowers in your living areas at all times. You might have a soft spot for a well-made quilts and miniature pots and planters.
Global. Throughout your travels – be it in the flesh or online, you have discovered a sense of style that encompasses exactly what you like and who you are. This Moroccan-inspired room pairs Moroccan finishes with a cool-blue palette and contemporary edge.
Yesteryear mix-up. You find it hard to classify your style as you like bits of this and bits of that. You gravitate towards older styles, but not a specific decade.
