For this elegant landmarked Berkeley home, designed by Albert Dodge Coplin, we had the challenge of designing a garden that delicately blends Japanese and English style vernaculars at the request of the client. All photos by Robert Trachtenberg

Since it was very hot summer and lot of gardens were looking brown and without any life, we implied feng shui garden elements, and filled up the space to make it look full of life.

A view from inside the entry courtyard at twilight shows the connection to the outdoors from the main rooms of the residence. On the left, the living room opens up to the water garden, as does the office space across the pond. Duffy Healey, photographer.

This was previously a weedy opening in a forest, located at the back of a suburban backyard. The homeowners, a veterinarian and a teacher, wanted to create a habitat that encouraged the presence of song birds, amphibians and reptiles. We built a shallow 'artificial swamp' along with a yatsuhashi-style boardwalk that cantilevers over the water at the far end. The plant palette consists of native grasses, pollinator-friendly perennials, shrubs that provide food and cover for song birds, and structural specimen plants. Newly installed 9/16. 庭の入り口からの風景は、雪見燈篭と石橋の織り成す眺め。周囲の植栽や下草と溶け込ませ、石材が目立ち過ぎずお庭のキャストとして馴染む事が理想的です。

The solid stone "moon gate" is the primary entry to the garden. It frames the pagoda style pavilion and the "good karma" boulder. Our masons hand chiseled each stone on site and set the stone against a wooden arched form to ensure consistency of the arc.
