Des zones tampon Galerie, véranda, couloir… l’engawa, littéralement « bord côté », est difficile à caractériser. Il a un rôle d’isolant, de transition entre l’intérieur et l’extérieur, mais aussi de lieu de détente ou encore de méditation. Cette galerie qui court tout autour de la maison peut aussi se retrouver à l’intérieur, entourant un patio. Il est prolongé par un auvent ou noki qui protège à la fois du soleil et de la pluie.
