The homeowners of this HDB maisonette flat in Serangoon are an outgoing couple who wanted a home designed to be able to host large gatherings and cell groups comfortably.
Hu Wen and Mei Ying designed an open plan combining the living, balcony, dining and open kitchen into a single contiguous space. A small yard was created at where the back of the wet kitchen used to be and, cleverly located behind the new open kitchen, it is where the couple is able to keep their unsightly laundry hidden away while entertaining guests. In this way, the social and service areas on the first storey are kept neatly separated, making it always ready for hosting!
The homeowners are also passionate foodies! They love exploring new cafes and restaurants around our island, so the designers transformed their balcony into their very own "cafe"! A glass canopy, wooden trellis and fairy lights transform the space into a great spot for brunch during the day or romantic candlelight dinner at night.
This project was done in collaboration with Bezelel's Craftsmen.

The brief was to transform the apartment into a home that was suited to our client’s (a young married couple) needs of entertainment and desire for an open plan.
By reimagining the spatial hierarchy of a typical Singaporean home, the existing living room was converted nto a guest room, 2 bedrooms were also transformed into a single living space centered in the heart of the apartment.
White frameless doors were used in the master and guest bedrooms, extending and brightening the hallway when left open. Accents of graphic and color were also used against a pared down material palette to form the backdrop for the owners’ collection of objects and artwork that was a reflection of the young couple’s vibrant personalities.

Kitchen - The original yard, wc, store and windowless kitchen were combined to create an expanded "swiss-knife" kitchen that functions as an all-in-one space, served with natural light and ventilation from the existing yard window and the new bar opening. The same 3m long dark textured tiles clad the walls here, creating a continuity from the living spaces into the Kitchen.
