This is a French West Indies-inspired home with contemporary interiors. The floor plan was designed to provide lake views from every living area excluding the Media Room and 2nd story street-facing bedroom. Taking aging in place into consideration, there are master suites on both levels, elevator, and garage entrance. The three steps down at the entry were designed to get extra front footage while accommodating city height restrictions since the front of the lot is higher than the rear. The family business is run out of the home so a separate entrance to the office/conference room is off the front courtyard. Built on a lakefront lot, the home, its pool, and pool deck were all built on 138 pilings. The home boasts indoor/outdoor living spaces on both levels and uses retractable screens concealed in the 1st floor lanai and master bedroom sliding door opening. The screens hold up to 90% of the home’s conditioned air, serve as a shield to the western sun’s glare, and keep out insects. The 2nd floor master and exercise rooms open to the balcony and there is a window in the 2nd floor shower which frames the breathtaking lake view. This home maximizes its view! This bioclimatic custom residence on a small lake in Orlando, Florida, brings open, flow through living to its tropical garden site. Three pavilions provide live/work/guest spaces, intertwining architecture with awesome mature live oaks. Dramatic cantilevers provide shade and dynamic movement. The simplicity of the architecture meets a cooly casual materials palette, including ocala block, galvalume, and corrugated cement siding on the exterior, with terrazzo floors, louvered windows and exposed block on the interior.

How Do I Plan My Kitchen Renovation?

Singaporeans love food, eating and cooking. That makes kitchens an important part of their homes. With limited space available in HDB apartments and condominiums, your kitchen design needs to be a blend of form and function.

1. Lifestyle: Choose a Kitchen Layout That Works For You

If you’re renovating your kitchen or designing a new one from scratch, the first question to ask is "what layout do I want?" Your layout determines the way you cook, entertain. For example, do you want a kitchen island to socialise and entertain friends and family? Or would you like easy access between the stove, sink and refrigerator?

2. Functionality: Understand the Basic Functions of Your Kitchen Design

Storage, preparation and cooking are the three main functions in a Singaporean kitchen, and you should plan according to these three factors. Most homes have either an L-shaped, U-shaped or galley kitchen. Thoughtful space planning around these three factors ensures that you work smoothly around the kitchen. Together, the three factors make up the kitchen work triangle.

3. Design: Which Style, Colours and Materials For Your Kitchen?

In general, use one colour for vertical surfaces (kitchen cabinets), and another for horizontals (kitchen counters). Save vivid colours for the backsplash, which can be easily changed. Your choice of colour for surfaces will also direct your selection of finishes for the kitchen countertop material, taps, hood and sinks. For example, a Scandinavian style wood-themed kitchen can contrast with black taps and geometric backsplash tiles. Lighting is often called the jewellery of kitchen design - getting this right will impress friends and family. Pendant lights should be used on a kitchen island to create atmosphere. Soft lighting can bring out the textures of the kitchen cabinet's design and pattern of backsplash tile finishes.
