About Us

eye heart hand rugs reveal our traceable connections to the designer's eye, the heart of the land, and the artisan’s hand. It is intentional that 'earth' stands at the center of our name. eye heart hand is a collaboration based on the belief that we are responsible for sustaining our fragile planet. This guides our principles, process, and vision. Our field-to-fiber-to-floor rugs are made of 100% hand-spun, hand-dyed, and hand-tufted wool from the Guilds' High Peak Estate in New Zealand. The Guilds' environmental stewardship has been recognized by the Queen Elizabeth II National Trust and is reflected in the health of their land and flock. Their Perendale sheep produce wool that is extraordinarily soft, strong, and resilient – treated only by the sun and seasons, never bleached. This wool is carefully shorn once a year at maximum staple length. U.S.-based artist Kate D. Spain, who studied at The Rhode Island School of Design and at the University of Canterbury, New Zealand, created the eye heart hand collection. She is inspired by natural forms in her gardens and throughout the world. A team of GoodWeave(R)-certified artisans in India transform each of Kate's designs into a handmade rug of timeless beauty. Spectrometry testing assures the purity and origin of the wool. Each finished rug is hand-signed and hand-numbered by the artist, shepherd, and rug maker. eye heart hand is a convergence of experience, mastery and hope – linking three countries and cultures around a singular, distinct and sustainable fiber – to create unique rugs that are beautiful, useful and enduring.
