We lost our house in the Santa Cruz Mountains fire of 2020. We immediately started working with Kurt on ALL aspects of the enormous task of getting our site permitted and ready to build, design of a new house and getting a permit. Our site had many unforseen complications to get it approved to build. Kurt recommended the appropriate professionals to deal with (geologist, geotech, builder), and sheperded all of our reports and needed information through the special county group set up to get us a permit. While doing all of this we also came up with a building design. This was a very good process. Kurt wanted to design the house WE wanted not one that he wanted and we really appreciated this. He was very responsive to our needs and dealt with every issue in a timely manner. We could not have found a better person to guide us through this extremely stressful project and we are very pleased with the resulting building that is now rising out of the ground. I would Highly recommend him to anyone who wants a creative, responsive, reasonably priced architect.

Kurt is quite easy to work with, listens well, communicates well, understand practicalities and budgets very well, but is also both flexible and imaginative with design suggestions, and in my opinion has good taste. My project involved a new front doorway and a redesign of the front of the house to improve the look and feel of the house and access to it. The transformation was quite marked, although teh basic design style (Mid Century Modern) was maintained, and many neighbors have complimented the transformation. Kurt accomplished this with a limited budget using some imaginative and subtle changes to the facade of the existing structure, decks and fences. He was also helpful in finding and helping me deal with the contract9or who did the work. This is the second project Kurt has done for me. The first was a more extensive and complicated addition to and renovation of my prior house.In both projects Kurt was equally imaginative and practical in his design and the results were well worth the expense in both cases. If I ever have another evidential project, be it building a dream house or a slight modification of an existing house, I would not hesitate to have Kurt do the architectural work.

Kurt’s excellent sense of style combined with his well grounded practicality was the foundation of our successful whole-house remodel project. Kurt’s patient and relaxed approach drew out our best ideas which he very capably translated to our plan. He was also very helpful with supplying ideas that were successful with other clients’ projects. During the construction stage, he patiently worked with our contractor, who’s communication style could be challenging at times. The many compliments on the design from both our near and dear, in addition to many complete strangers, are testament to its broad appeal. We would highly recommend Kurt for both his hard skills as an architect and designer, combined with his approachable and people focused values.

I really enjoyed working with Kurt throughout the entire process and give him my highest recommendation. Here is a a brief description of our project... New 2 car Garage with new ADU above the Garage. This new structure connects to the old house which becomes a remodeled Kitchen and Living area with addition. Total sqft - 3,000

We are seeing the “end” results in that the framing and roof are on our house, so we wanted to provide a review at this point in the project, which is a new home. We worked with Kurt from the beginning of the design process for our house. Kurt paid close attention to the architectural style we liked and the way we were going to be using the spaces. He was very accommodating to our schedule and asked us a lot of questions throughout the design process. He knows the important questions to get us thinking and sharing insights that he designed into the home. Another plus was his years of experience working with Santa Cruz county; he worked on getting our plans through the permitting process as smoothly as possible. He thought of some great features that we are now seeing in real life, and we are doubly happy with. Our house is going to be so much better than we could’ve imagined it ourselves, or if we had gone with a builder-designed home.

We hired Kurt for a complete demolish and rebuild of our house. He was very patient dealing with our differing ideas and walked us through options while providing real life opinions from other projects. He did not rush us and stuck to his original estimate and contract. Kurt also handled the city planning committee hearing, planning department, building department and arranged/recommended other professionals for soil analysis, topological survey and the structural/civil engineering work. Our house is not typical for the area, requiring Kurt to incorporate some unique requirements, like an indoor spa pool, into the final design and was our champion getting them through planning. Kurt is very easy to work with and adapts well to peoples different style, ensuring they can visualize the final design and addressing any tweaks without complaint.

Kurt helped us out with a whole-home project, including a kitchen/dining remodel, master addition, and an outdoor deck/patio. He had great ideas that really elevated the project. Each area of the house has visual interest that pulls you into the next space, and everything just makes sense. He was also available from the beginning, to working with the builder, all the way through final inspection, which was very helpful.

Kurt listens well, and translates what he learns into practical architectural solutions, and brings a wealth of experience and connections. Plus he's a genuinely good person, and doesn't have the "architectural attitude (his designer ego is always checked at the door). My wife & I, and my mom, have worked with Kurt for over a year & a half, on 2 projects: 1 - a new semi-attached, 2 car garage, incorporating a a roof deck, as well as a formal front entryway for our house. 2 - a detached standalone ADU (Added Dwelling Unit), 2 bed/2 bath with an attached 1 car garage. This was a challenge to fit in our lot, along with the existing house, new garage, and city land-use and planning rules. Kurt really helped finesse our way thru these challenges.

Kurt Useldinger has completed plans for our remodel and addition in Scotts Valley. His plans were approved by the City of Scotts Valley. Kurt has done an excellent job. His ideas are great, and his plans are quality work. More important, Kurt spent time communicating with the planning department and shaping the project with the approval process in mind. Kurt is a very positive and optimistic person to work with. He took his time to get to know exactly what our priorities are in remodeling our house. It’s hard to find an architect that takes the time to listen and put together a project that focuses on your expectations and priorities. Kurt is easy to talk with and made the process much easier. We highly recommend Kurt Useldinger as your architect if you are planning an addition or a remodel.
