My wife and I can speak only in superlatives when we consider what our architect, Malcolm Brennan, has accomplished, for us and with us, in imagining and designing our new home on Folly Beach. He took pains immediately to understand our likes, dislikes and needs before he sketched a line. He visited frequently, walking with us through our present house, all the while interacting with us about our priorities and expectations. And when he did begin the sketch and formulate the plan, the result was one of sensible accommodation to our understandable needs as elderly clients (wide doors and hallways for wheel chairs, the master shower designed for unobstructed entry,…). The proposed layout of the home, the special attention to addressing risk from flooding and serious storms in the beach area, and the many little niceties set about the house, (such as a natural light “vent” from the roof to the internal windowless master closet, a metal roof above the screened porch to provide the pleasant sound of rain drops, tailored audio-visual area, and other), speak collectively to Mr. Brennan’s sense of client commitment.
From our experience we knew we would see a beautiful modern home, well planned for utility, safety, comfort and resistance to nature’s bad moods. What we hadn’t anticipated, however, was his unusually creative dedication to artistic detail; externally by nestling the home in a soft, complementary landscape to magnify its striking beauty; internally there are eye-catching creations such as the custom made audiovisual unit, raised fireplace, engaging sense of elegance in the well composed kitchen, and glossy good looks of the baths. Further to the piece de resistance, to wit: upon entering the living area, one’s eyes are drawn unavoidably to the huge overarching window covering more than half the rear wall. The view from that spot, featuring a sea of marsh rustling its way to the Folly River, is indeed a visual poem.
Our working with Mr. Brennan has been fun and instructive. He is very energetic, easy to talk with and anxious to please. His demeanor is warm and chatty, full of good suggestions to help decision-making. When we make suggestions he accommodates us fully. At times he explains how a suggested change would be inadvisable. On these occasions he explains his point of view clearly and persuasively.
Mr. Brennan is our hero. We trust him absolutely to oversee the blooming of this castle, our castle.
