About Us

Neil Cownie is an award winning architect who designs buildings that are enduring in quality and responsive to the needs of our fast-changing world – for families, developers, businesses and institutions. He is known for his hands-on approach, an architect who extends his expertise through all aspects of design and construction, trusted at the heart of the process. Neil started his own boutique architectural service in 2009 where his active approach is built upon his considerable professional credentials. As a design director of renowned architectural practice Overman and Zuideveld for over 10 years, many of his numerous projects received industry awards, including RAIA Awards in the categories of Multi-Residential, Institutional, Interior, Commercial and Residential. Unlimited, Neil has designed for a diversity of public and private projects; he is a valued member of the Metropolitan Redevelopment Authority’s ‘Architectural Panel’ and is an A+ member of the Australian Institute of Architects. Architectural trends or a signature style do not restrict Neil Cownie’s designs. Each new project is treated as a unique journey. These are a collaborative team experience in which Neil works closely with his clients, builders, contractors and other stakeholders. Neil takes the time to listen closely and observe how his clients, or their customers, wish to live and work. The results are intelligent spaces and buildings that resonate with his client’s physical, emotional and financial briefs as well as the climatic parameters of their site.

Neil is designing our new house and we have just celebrated getting development approval. He is very approachable, carefully listens to our thoughts and is always willing to try new ideas or reappraise approaches as the design has developed. It's an unusual site and Neil''s worked hard to address our brief to come up with a unique design that suits us, the setting and will be like no other house here. We have been impressed with the way Neil constantly develops and refines ideas for the house. We are very much enjoying the journey of designing our new home and are looking forward to a beautiful and unique finished product.

Neil designed our 'forever home', for my family of 4. Working with Neil on this project has been a pleasure - he has put an incredible amount of thought into every aspect of our house, from the large features to the smallest detail. We are so glad to have had Neil design our home and highly recommend him. The architecture is stunning, and very personal to what my husband and I wanted. Neil really nailed the type of house that we wanted, and has made it so much better than we ever imagined. The design also is specifically tailored to the seasonal angles of the sun, and wind direction, on our site, to make the house very comfortable to live in all year round. We are in the building phase at the moment and Neil has closely supervised the build and had many meetings with the builder and other trades to ensure the process runs smoothly. The result has been a very low stress project for us, with Neil worrying about all the details.

The scope of services my firm, PLAN E provided on the most recent project undertaken with Neil Cownie Architects was to provide landscape concepts, contract documentation and site administration during construction on the Rosscommon Road Floreat development. We were particularly interested in this project due to the high level of architectural design shown and great emphasis on the relationship between landscape and architecture. The other reason we particularly enjoy working with Neil is that each project we work on is a true collaboration with Architect, Client and other members of the project team, ensuring that a holistic approach to all aspects of the project is achieved. In addition, being a "hands-on architect" ensures that every detail is considered during the design and documentation process, ensuring a successful outcome for all involved. We have no hesitation in recommending Neil to anyone who wants an architecturally designed home. We first met Neil two years ago and have been extremely impressed with his professionalism, creativity, attention to detail and work ethic. He understood straight away what we liked and then evolved our project into a house that is full of interesting details and very functional design. He has an eye on our budget and is a first-class liaison between us and our builders.

We engaged the services of Neil Cownie to transform a very neglected Cottesloe workers cottage into our beautiful, luxurious family home and we could not be happier. We have beautiful street facade and a stunning addition to the back that is so functional and of the highest quality. Neil was patient, thoughtful and highly skilled in his approach and design.

Commented: Hi - that door is stunning. Can I ask where you got it from please?The timber portion of the door is from the original building. The coloured glass is new. I designed the layout and chose the colours for the glass. The glass was supplied and installed by a lead light...
