Peter Clark and crew recently completed an addition to our house, which included a multi-purpose room, bath, and small deck. He was very good as general contractor and we could not be more pleased with our addition. He was always willing to take extra time to speak with us about concerns that came up, and his knowledge about all aspects of construction was excellent. His subcontractors also were very good. We had a difficult situation regarding connection to the existing house, which is not level and plumb. Also, the plans did not show the correct measurements for the new roof height, so as planned it would not fit under the old soffit while maintaining the necessary ground clearance. Peter made adjustments that resolved these problems at minimal extra cost to us, which "saved" the project. He and his workers were considerate of us throughout the construction, and we felt very little disruption in our daily routine. He was excellent at dealing with changes and negotiating with us regarding their cost, as well as price reductions (allowances) for elimination of some items. He also took care of all the "little" items and fine-tuning that needed to be done at the end of the job that some other contractors might leave undone. The project was on budget. It was also done in a very timely manner, with a boost from unusually mild, dry winter weather. The above notwithstanding, stay involved. With any contractor, you and/or your architect must keep vigilant watch to make sure what is being done is what you expect. The general contractor and/or his subs and crew tend to be very busy and may not interpret your ideas, standards, and plans the way you do. Even if they do, what is materializing may not be what you now realize would be better. Either way, don't hesitate to stop things and work it out. Peter's even temperament and intelligent flexibility facilitated when this came up a few times. The bottom line: good character is the most important factor in choosing a general contractor for your project.
