Sergio is a gem. We moved into a 150 year old garden apartment in Chelsea which hadn't been renovated in decades, Sergio transformed it completely into a dream home. His taste is impeccable. We're first time homeowners, and he was very patient with all our questions and attentive to our ideas. We love our new home. Sergio also has a pit bull named Rocco who we love too.

Simply put, working with Sergio Mercado is a sublime pleasure. From the moment you meet him a professional calm enters the process and continues through to completion. Sergio did the interior design for our architectural home, and brought his sleek sophistication to each room to create an environment for our family that feels deeply personal. To this end he listened and understood what we were looking for in our contemporary home, and how we lived our daily lives. He enthusiastically presented myriads of options and ideas for us to select from until we found just what felt right. He designed gorgeous custom pieces and oversaw their fabrication, he resolved construction issues with our contractor and architect. Sergio has contacts to exceptional tradespeople, and he found truly unique interior design elements so that each space reflects our personal taste and comfort. What could have been a stressful process became exciting and enjoyable with Sergio at the helm!

As a design professional myself, I have worked with Sergio for many years. When it was time to renovate our classic Soho loft, Sergio was the only designer we considered. Other reviewers have commented on his consummate professionalism and "calm under pressure" sensibility, and I would just add unquestionable honesty and integrity to that list. Its hard to pinpoint one area where he shines most, but I would say he is a master of interior lighting and is familiar with all of the most recent innovations, products and fixtures. He created sculptural columns of light throughout our space, with lit niches strategically integrated into the architecture, creating something both functional and sculptural at the same time. He took an 80's era oak floor (think yellow basketball court...) and turned it into a chic field of mocha colored cerrused oak. Gorgeous He even upgraded the mechanicals and oversaw the installation of central air conditioning! We loved working with Sergio and we love the result of our collaboration every day. Dont hesitate to bring Sergio onto your project. 5 stars!

Sergio comes with my highest recommendation. We hired him for his amazing, minimalist design sense to outfit our new townhouse, but it was his incredible attention to detail (he even picked out doorstops) and calming, organized personality (despite unforseen delays from third party contractors) that really put him into a league of his own in our books. He was truly our partner in completing our dream home and went above and beyond the call of duty to see it to completion. The only sad part about completing the home is it signaled the end of working with him on a regular basis - but we will definitely be working with Sergio in the future!

My husband and I bought two apartments in a Manhattan Co-op and needed to combine/ gut renovate them. A friend referred me to Sergio Mercado Design and I could not have been happier with the firm’s work. From the start, Sergio was extremely professional, reliable, always showed up on time, and had a vision. As Manhattan Co-ops require many hoops to jump through just to get the project off of the ground, it was extremely important that we had the exact plans to submit to the board, the plans to be signed off by the Department of Buildings, and plans for the contractor; Sergio provided and executed all of this and was incredibly buttoned up throughout the entire process. From a design perspective, our experience was also incredibly positive. While I could have been overwhelmed through choosing tiles, flooring, cabinetry, etc., Sergio presented me with a handful of options for each item and we chose from there, so nothing was overwhelming. He has impeccable taste and a great eye. When we hired Sergio, approximately 2.5 years ago, we were recently married, no kids. We now have two children; Sergio designed a contemporary apartment for us that took us from two adults to a family of four. He used every inch of space available (important in Manhattan apartments) and imparted a beautiful aesthetic that would work for a couple or a family of four. We couldn’t be happier with our apartment or our experience with Sergio Mercado Design.

Before we hired Sergio, we interviewed several designers. We really liked his modern design aesthetic and were very impressed with his portfolio of work. What sealed the deal for us was upon his first time meeting us at our town house in Brooklyn (which was just framed in) was his initiative and vision. What was not anticipated was his cool demeanor, excellent organization, and ability to communicate. Not only that, but his patience to take on a very difficult project with an unbelievably difficult developer (house was new construction) was unprecedented. Sergio personally designed our custom mill work, master bed, closets, and stairs/railings. He also purchased beautiful modern furniture that fits the house perfectly, while collaborating with another designer to build out our outdoor spaces. He even chose and coordinated the small items such as art placement, waste bins, linens, door hardware, door stops, etc. No detail was spared. To add to this, he always presented options for every item. Lastly, his rolodex of subcontractors we're excellent and did amazing work. I recently worked with Sergio Mercado on my NYC Apt which was a gut renovation. I had a wonderful experience and recommend him highly. I am a retired Fashion Designer, so I was looking for someone with a great taste level who didn't mind that I also had some ideas of my own. Sergio is extremely talented, very professional, and we accomplished a lot at every meeting. He is very decisive, had many creative ideas that I never would have thought of myself. My apartment is now finished, and I absolutely love it! He is amazing!

Sergio Mercado is absolutely the best. I have done three prior additions on my house in Chicago, so I have met a few designers, architects and contractors. This was my first experience in NYC. He is knowledgeable about every aspect of design, whether its room construction, electrical, hvac, appliances, kitchens, bathrooms, living areas or bedrooms and all at the cutting edge. The bonus is that he is so kind and easy to work with. He had unlimited patience and understanding, in order to achieve the completion of our project, which was a complete renovation of a 2 bedroom apartment on Park Ave, NYC. This was no small feat, in that the apartment probably had not been updated for 60+ years. Whenever there was a question, issue with the contractor, or procedural problem, Sergio was readily available and with the solution ( we never had to wait days for a return phone call ). The finished apartment exceeded our expectations. There is no doubt, that Sergio is the only person we would use for any future project.

We met Sergio Mercado through our real estate agent. We interviewed other designers, but were drawn to Sergio by his design esthetic and his calm demeanor. The home we renovated is not our primary residence, so it was vital that we connect with someone we could trust to not only design or home, but also manage the project. He provided us with progress photos and updates throughout the course of our renovation. The design of our home exceeded our expectations and we would hire him again on a future project.

I just finished my NY townhouse renovation with Sergio Mercado. I found Sergio by browsing Houzz and immediately fell in love with the pictures of his work. Even though I looked at other designers for about two months or so, I kept coming back to his Houzz page. I am so glad I followed my gut because he was literally sent from heaven! I was initially quite nervous as it was our very first time renovating and the horror histories about renovations didn’t help the cause. Yet, Sergio managed to listen, provide advice and work with us every step of the way during the selection process. He is very organized so we were able to select most of the appliances and fixtures even before getting our project approved which helped move things along as there is always an enormous amount of paper work you need before engaging on an apartment renovation. Sergio took care of all the dirty job for us and made it seem so easy. Honestly, I think we were extremely fortunate to work with Sergio. Our personal experience was beyond phenomenal. He helped us every step of the way from the beginning of our project to the very end of it, including the concept, design and overall project oversight. Every single detail was taken care of and he made our first renovation experience the best one of our lives. We spent a wonderful time going over furniture, art galleries and every single item we needed help with (from bathroom accessories to sheets!). We have demanding jobs and work long hours so I couldn’t even imaging how we would have time to go over a full gut renovation without losing our heads, but somehow Sergio managed to make the process fun. He has a clear vision and clean aesthetic which helped us envisioned what could be done with our place. Even when we created tons of storage, our place looks spacious, clean and gorgeous. Sergio is extremely talented yet he doesn’t try to impose himself to clients but work respectfully with them. He really helped when decisions where difficult to make. We are so thankful for Sergio’s work and beyond thrilled with the end result. We love how functional, yet beautiful our place is. There is absolutely nothing I would have changed about this entire experience. I highly recommend Sergio, he is a jewel!

It was a pleasure working with Sergio, he made the entire process so easy and the result is stunning. He designed, created and executed our renovation with meticulous attention to every detail and worked around some issues that came up quite flawlessly. We have recommended him to several people who have used him and have had the same results. We definitely plan to use him again on future projects and look forward to it.

We first learned about Sergio Mercado from our Italian designer friends who raved about his "sublime" visual vocabulary. At once we found his work captivating, yet approachable- a deeply intuitive transposition of industrial materials within exquisite contemporary settings. After our first meeting in person we hired Sergio on the spot. His assignment: the blank-canvas renovation of a classic Tribeca loft, featuring an expansive layout and atypically high ceilings. Sergio spent a full year conceptualizing with us prior to construction, unfailingly patient, energetically open-minded, an unwavering source of guidance and reassurance. The results wildly exceeded our aspirations. Bold planes of blackened steel, mirror glass, granite schist and fumed oak generated immense depth and intensity. Sergio designed a ten-foot glass shower enclosure, an ingenious movable translucent wall, a fourteen-foot riveted steel fireplace mantel- showstopper features that instantly caught the attention of design publications. Other noteworthy elements: handcrafted kitchen cabinetry uninterrupted by external pulls, an integrated master bed custom built on-site, and two restored 1880s etched glass doors integrated into the powder room and guest bath. The finished project is a study in refinement and architectural intrigue.
