I was fortunate to have Stephen work with me on a design for our rear courtyard. He listened to our needs and worked out the constraints to develop a clever design that accomplished everything we wanted in a beautiful manner. Stephen’s use of plant material, natural surfaces, and creative walls and gates come together in a timeless environment that looks as if it has always been there. Beyond my personal experience, I have collaborated with Stephen and his staff on many of our residential architecture projects. Stephen is a bold designer who has a tremendous gift of conceiving beautiful outdoor places. I say places because rather than being distracted by the nano details of a project, Stephen always has a clear understanding , a vision, a goal he is trying to achieve of grand outdoor rooms for his clients to spend time much in the way they would the rooms of our home. Stephen understands scale. Our homes are treated like large outdoor sculptures in his garden. He is a true classical designer who understands axis, termination, and approach. He has a thorough knowledge and attention to the architecture and structures he designs around. The end result is seamless existence of indoor and outdoor spaces, views and vistas, each with a place in the grandeur of creation. Detail are everything in our profession and his love for detail shines through in his work. From limestone caps to ornamental box wood hedges, to a natural field of grass or thicket of evergreens Stephen has a plan for each. I hired SWH after starting a landscape renovation project with inadequate landscape company. It quickly became apparent that I needed professional guidance from an individual with a vision as to my goal....a beautiful, yet hardy durable area for my dogs Steve came into a messy project mid stream and was quickly able to bring order and beauty. He promptly responded to my initial inquiry and presented a drawing within a week. Steve and his staff provided the blue print and photos of all plant material at our first meeting. Because he had so closely listened to my needs and desires, I was able to go forward with the first plan....not one adjustment was necessary. One of my biggest concerns was installation. I used the company -The Green Season Group- who Steve had recommended. The installation was MAGIC! Right on budget and schedule. The plant material and hardscaping is perfect. Stephen W. Hackney is the most capable, professional residential landscape architect I've worked with. His creative vision is top notch and he has the rare gift of being able to explain it clearly (even to non-visual people). Beyond that, his knowledge of plants is encyclopedic. Sometimes when I'm on a trip, I'll snap a picture of a beautiful vine or groundcover and text it to him. Within a few minutes, he texts me back with the name of the species. It's great working with someone with that kind of knowledge base. Highly recommended!

I have worked with Steve's firm on several projects, including my own home. They take excellent care to make certain all aspects of the design are thoroughly considered, and always deliver a beautiful, original product. There is not another landscape architect I could recommend after working with Steve. I love his classical approach to thinking about the master plan first. Plans are presented in such a way that you can really begin to visualize the spaces before the first bit of dirt has been moved.
