We highly recommend James and Cedar Mill Designs. In 2019 we had a very large cherry tree removed from our front yard. From it, James created a dining room table with bench, a 10' mantle, and a coffee table. We gave him creative license and are so glad we did. His vision and execution are above and beyond anything we could have imagined. He is a true artist.

James was very helpful, patient and knowledgeable knowing what we were looking for in a bar top. He is passionate, excited and loves his work. He transformed the slab of wood into a beautiful bar top.

I first met James in his shop where he took the time to give me and my wife a tour of his property and then shared with us the intricacies of his process. James took the time to ask about our design preferences but also married our ideas with his expertise. It was this marrying of form, function, aesthetic, and story that culminated to a custom walnut table that will forever be cherished by my family. This table was a 100+ year old walnut tree that sat on the property of my childhood home. From day one James knew he wasn't only making a table, but he was preserving a memory. James is a craftsman. Every element of his art is intentional. He's the best at what he does and his art is absolutely stunning. It's obvious James has a passion for his work. But not just his work, but for people too. James did an incredible job creating a unique, Ice Walnut dining room table (96” x 40”) for our family. Instant family heirloom and built with so many amazing details. James builds some of the highest quality furniture we have ever seen. Ever. James did such great work we quickly commissioned him to also build us a custom Walnut bar (108”L x 20”W x 42”H) to add much seating directly behind (and looking over) our basement sectional couch. Looks great and the ability to have the custom-size bar we wanted built out of the exact slab of wood we chose with James was a fantastic experience!

James and his family were amazing from the start! After having a hard time finding a large piece of hardwood for a bench in out newly constructed mudroom I was directed to Cedar Mill Design... I called left a message James returned call and said I have a piece just perfect for you but I would like for you to come see what I have an choose what you think is best. We were greeted by his lovely family and his kiddos took my son and off they went to play while James walked us through is process and we choose our piece. I did contact James about adding an additional piece for a coat hooks and he choose a piece and hooks that matched. James communicates through EMAIL which is great... He came out measured, called me when he was ready, he had me double check a couple measurements and scheduled delivery, came on time both times and his work is just like I imagined GREAT! He had everything he needed to make a few cuts to fit perfectly oils to condition the wood and help to make everything go smoothly. I do not have any negative thing about our project or James. Detailed compassionate and loyal to what he loves!

James was easy to work with and is truly connected to your project. Give him your end goal and let his ideas soar. Very quick to respond to emails and any questions you may have. End product was more than we asked for and looked amazing.

James was amazing to work with, he walked and showed us the whole process, it was definitely interesting to see the steps that need to take place before he can even start on a project. He did a 10ft hickory bar top, he was so accurate with the finish with blending colors with the cabinets and flooring. It turned out beautiful, it is a functional art piece.

James Allen is a consummate professional. You might think it’s scary to have a custom piece created from a trunk of a tree, and it is. James takes the wood from a trunk of a tree to to drying to milling to creation. And every step of the way he knows exactly what he’s doing. I can’t tell you how beautiful is the result and what a work of art. He created a window seat with matching dining table for me. It is both beautiful and sturdy, both feminine and masculine. It is practical yet a work of art. I couldn’t be happier!
