Alun Arthur Architect

When contemplating a renovation on our house we decided to use Alun as we had used him previously on two successful projects Alun likes to be involved with the design from the word go . He presented us with several possibilities for our project in his usual professional manner in which we were actively involved in the process and was instrumental in achieving planning from the local authority . Alun produced detailed tender documents for builders and on selection was on site from the start of the project . We met with Alun and the builder often to discuss matters going forward both available on the phone when needed .Alun has worked closely with subcontractors when dealing with materials of a bespoke nature . He has successfully transformed our terraced properties into modern airy ones filled with light . I have always found Alun approachable and available to meet or at the end of the phone if needed. I would not have any hesitation in recommending him for any future project big or small you may be thinking of.

I have used Alun Arthur's services on 2 projects, one a domestic extension to a period property and the other ,a reconfiguration and extension of a nursing home.The latter was complicated by the existing occupancy of residents who needed to be protected and considered at all times.A complicated jigsaw! The domestic extension created extra bathrooms and utility spaces. Alun excels at following the clients brief,but taking it one step further than this client imagined to be possible.Hence a very satisfied client on both projects.

My initial request was to have small single storey extension design containing a toilet, positioned at the back of the house. However, Alun suggested demolishing the existing side porch, and replacing with a single storey extension, from the front to the back of the house. This allowed for the provision of a toilet, shower, utility room and reception area with several wardrobes. The pitched roof allowed for provision of additional upper glass panels, giving extra light into the reception area. An additional suggestion from Alun was to transfer the access to the stairs from the inside of the living room, to the new extension, by removing part of the existing external wall. This enabled the living room to be reconfigured, which transformed and increased the usable space. Alun provided the initial design concepts as per agreed timespans, giving me several options and worked with me before settling on a final design scheme. Alun also provided help with planning permission and interpretation of building regulations. All aspects of the design stages were documented, including the stress loadings. Alun sent out requests for quotations from a series of builders before the final builder was selected. Alun had a good relationship with the builder, with several visits during the extension phase. In conclusion a very successful design, Alun gave lots of help and had a very professional approach to the project. I have been so impressed with his work, that I have commissioned him to provide a second design scheme to the rear of the house.

Alun's approach to design is much in line with clients' thoughts and requirements. He not only strives for broad overall concepts in context with the surroundings and nature, but also pays attention to detail which is sympathetic to the overall architecture. Throughout the life of our project we encountered many difficulties including dealing with local authority, legislative requirements and indeed a difficult site. Alun approached these problems with a 'can do' attitude and not only solved issues but eased the whole process. We found Alun very easy to work with and was prompt in reacting to our requirements throughout our build. He is patient and accommodating, listening to ideas and incorporating them back into the project. We have now been living in our barn conversion for 5 years and are delighted with how it has enhanced our life. Without Alun, it would not have come to fruition.

Having built our own home once before some 40 years ago and then using a firm who sold pre-designed plans with the materials at a set price, this time we wanted to be much more involved and knew exactly what we wanted. We had a site that was narrow, and slightly sloping front to back and side to side. First was to find an Architect who would listen to us and be sympathetic to our needs and wish list. We actually interviewed and visited five architects, after each meeting we were bowled over by the “ I can do this, and this is what I have built, and this is what we can incorporate for you, we will build you the best looking house in the area etc”. The only person who listened to us wrote down notes walked around the property /site as it was, was Alun Arthur, when he returned with sketches he was the ONLY architect who listened to us. We were very, very pleased with how he had incorporated all our wish list and more. If there was any request that could not be met he had a solution and explanation for the alternative. At the end of the project we have a very individual house including all that we wanted with few compromises, our house is admired by most but in the main we have what we wanted because we went with the person that listened and not the firm that had spectacular portfolios or masses of self confidence in their ability.
