I like the cabinet doors up high, but would not put books on the top shelves. Maybe photo albums, though, if they were uniform looking in nice colors.

This is an example of a combination of some exposed and some covered storage in the built in buffet. This is smaller than ours would be, but it’s interesting. We don’t like the open skinny part on top though.
