This was done some time ago so I don't remember the specifics, but this was made with off-the-shelf stainless steel cables, and custom welded steel bars approximately 1/2" thick x 2"W, painted black. The intermediate vertical supports can be quite thin, as can the top rail if the supports are spaced closely enough. However, the posts are thicker at the ends so they are not deformed by the tensioning of the cables. I hope this helps.
