As I read these additional comments, I would like to offer these thoughts. You may chalk them up to a bit of paranoia and I'm sorry to be a downer for this greatly written article. But I think we should remember that not everyone looking at your home may be an interested, genuine home buyer, certainly during an open house. So I'd like to add my personal opinions about these items.

1. Remove your children's pictures. You don't know who's coming through your house for a showing or open house. Do you want to let people know who lives there? I feel the same about putting your children's photos on the internet - you've just given access to the identities of the people you love most in the world.

2. Remove memorabilia like autographed footballs or collections like antique cameras, even remove your grandma's pearls. Don't let people walking through your house even know those items exist. I have some old cameras worth only about $10, but our realtor told us to box them up because people would think they were worth something more and although she was there, couldn't watch everyone coming through for an open house.

3. Many have heard of this one, remove your prescription medications. There has been a trend in some markets of people going to open houses just to ransack the medicine cabinet for prescription drugs.

4. I work in the building design industry and as a current home buyer (we're looking), I use the photos to figure out the floor plan as best as I can. And I personally, would like to see a floor plan of the house to see if it's what I want. BUT, if you put your floor plan on a photo feed for your house, you've now just given the entire world access to the floor plan of your house, including all windows and doors that are potential entry points.

It's a sad world that these things are out there, but as we talk about how to sell your house, I think we should at least pause and consider the safety of your home as well.
