Vgkg, I harvested 2 Sangria watermelons recently. One was about 28-29 pounds I estimate and the other just a little bit smaller. Both were A+ melons...better than Sweetheart and fully as good as Raspa perhaps...just so good. I have rasised Sangria before. One problem is that it MUST be held to only 2 melons a plant for they tend to set on several.

Thanks Annie, hope your SP harvest is a good one. I start my slips in cell packs by mid April and plant those matured slips into the ground around May 10th. Then dig up those main mother plants around Labor Day which gives them around 110 days to fully develop after planting in the ground.

Glad I dug up those above before that surprise 3" of rain as that could have caused skin splitting issues. Some varieties are very susceptible to cracks resulting from heavy rain late in the season. I grow Red Garnets, I bought some RGs from Whole Foods about 10 years ago and am still using the slips from these same SPs even after 10 generations.

Thanks vgkg, I got that white sweet potato from Whole Foods too, how funny! I started my own slips last year and this year, but last year I got anxious and dug them too early, fearing a frost. This year they didn't go into the ground until June 10 because everything I've been told and read says they like warm ground. I made a "hill", covered it with black plastic and when it got warm removed the plastic and planted the slips in that "hill" so they'd have warm, loose soil. The vines are growing everywhere and they have blooms, pretty purple flowers, so I'm hopeful.
