looking for ideas to update this late 80's bathroom... on a budget

I would remove the lamp and the cabinet over the toilet. Paint the wall a solid color. Add a coordinating shower curtain. Possibly paint the cabinet under the sink and change the hardware and possibly paint the trim of the window black to match the tile on the floor.

I agree with ilikefriday! How about a new toilet? You didn't say what the budget is. You can get remanent granite which can be affordable for the current vanity. Home Depot sells cabinets with stone top units which are afordable too. . Sinks don't have to cost a ton!

Ah ok! Thank you kind people I guess the vote goes to tile then. I haven't started but will overlay over the existing tiles. And yes I was referring to walls. I was shown lovely pictures of bathrooms that had painted walls but was adviced against it as a) my bathroom is pretty small and b) those picts were probably of powder rooms. Thanks again

What is the space behind your shower currently? Is it closet or exterior? Is it possible to absorb that space into your shower for a bench or just to simply enlarge it? For your doors. Your shower door will need to swing out, or you can do a shower with only an opening and no door. Have you considered a "Neo-angle" shape instead of a rectangle for the shower to help the traffic flow too? The door closest to I should be the pocket/sliding door. And the door closest to the toilet should swing into the bathroom. here is an example of a neo angle shower:

If you are working with what you have - use the colors that you see

white and black, walls white match the wall tile, paint the vanity cabinet black, find a graphic black & white shower curtain, use black towels, find a vertical piece of art that has black, white and a bit of brown (to tie in the window frame color)
