Solar Panels - best material for roof

We are considering building a detached garage to our brick home. We have slate tiles on the main house. Do you recommend mixing the solar panels with the slate, or using the metal roof material as with this example? I would imagine slate and metal are more expensive than asphalt shingles, but wasn't sure which would be the preferred material, or if it matters. Thank you!

You should consult with a local roofer and a local solar company to determine what is best for your home. :) rf

It does not matter. The asphalt would be the least expensive for solar installation, as the mounting hardware should be less for this type of roofing material. However, metal roofing (such as in your picture) or slate can also be used in conjunction with solar panels. Look to your overall budget and style preference for this decision. Good luck on your project!

Apart from the cost you also need to consider the strength of the roof so that it can hold the weight the tiles and also viable to resist any type of leakage. You can consider steel panels, rubber and asphalt shingles for the purpose. Cedar plank shingles metal shingles and clay tile are a strict no-no as these would not be able to bear the weight or maintain the shape. Hope it helps.
