    Typically I would recommend no. If they have never been painted, I would recommend staying with the original. If they need to be updated, you can sand and add a coat of finish on them. If you are seeking to brighten things up, I would recommend another way. A lot of older homes are dark compared to contemporary homes and people tend to compare their homes to their piers'. One way around that is to add a more reflective finish to things (especially ceilings). The varnish, paint, flooring etc. That really can brighten things up, even though you haven't changed the color a lot. Lighting can also help in this regard.
