what would you change about this space?

This is our living room right off the foyer and kitchen. What can we do to update this space?

The fireplace has no decor because the tv is in the way.

We bought the glass shelf as a temporary fix for our devices but after 5 years its still here!

I hate the sectional because to me the space is too small for it. Only two ppl are in this room usually at one time but when family comes it serves a purpose.

Any decor or layout advice?

From the perspective of a home technology professional, I would ask if there is another room where we can house the equipment to get it out of your family room. We would run a couple of cables directly behind your TV for video and control. Everything would be much cleaner that way. I would also move the TV to the mirror location to allow the mantle to be less cramped and act as the appropriate focal point it should be. Let me know of this helps.

nowhere else to put the receivers. There isnt another room behind that wall.

my husband tried to hide cords thats why you see that L shape on the wall by the equipmemt but as we added it got too time consuming to stuff more cords in there

The tv is mounted in that spot so it can be seen from the kitchen prep area and sitting area.

Congrats! A client of ours could not decide too! To help her, we built a dresser with a changing table on top. And we are hoping this piece gets to stick around for a while. So we made it such that the changing table component can slide out and be overturned to be table top for the kid when she grows up.

I'm not a pro (and I hope a real designer answers your question), but here's how my family does it in Singapore: 1. Get rid of things. Don't fall prey to sunk cost fallacies. Just because you bought a piece of furniture or a bunch of clothing or books or toys or whatever, doesn't mean you need to keep them if they are no longer working for you. You can sell stuff on Carousell or donate them to needy people. Sometimes not having those things will provide more value, by freeing up space, than the false belief that you need to keep things around because you paid for them. 2. Everything should be multi-function. Especially here in Singapore, everything should have multiple uses. Your bed can lift up to provide storage. Your book shelf can also be your entertainment stand. Your coffee table can double as a breakfast nook or homework table. No tool in your kitchen should be a one-job tool (for example, if you have a blender, a food processor, a spice grinder, an immersion blender, a coffee grinder and a mortar and pestle - maybe it's time to clean out the kitchen cabinets). 3. Rotate toys We have a baby at home and try really hard not to accumulate too many toys. To do that we have two toy bins. Every two weeks we switch the bin that's in rotation, so every two weeks our baby gets "new" toys that he hasn't seen for a few weeks. That allows us to keep the total number of toys to a minimum and he seems to be pretty happy (and hasn't caught on to this trick yet). Hope that helps some. I've done a few similar units and created an island. The wc area has too many utilities (waste pipes etc) to be fully removed, plus living in a Maisonette myself, I find it practical to keep a powder room downstairs. You could push the wall between the front door (if you are able to purchase the access area, you can move the front door out as well for even more foyer space). In its place could be full height cabinets as well as your fridge. At the back wall you could plan your basin and hob on the island (or the other way around). My preference is to place a glass wall and door to the yard, so you have the washing machine away from the kitchen and another layer between the kitchen and the powder room. The chute is contained then as well, which works pretty ok. Your laundry will be out of sight if the glass is frosted, but still provides plenty of light. Do you have crawl space above that room so that the wires can be run to a closet or garage? We often provide this solution for clients in Colorado but construction can vary. A simple IR repeater or universal remote would then be used.

I would try to purchase an identical bookcase to the one on the left and put all the equipment in it. I think the remotes will work through the glass but if not you could remove the glass and put mesh in the openings. Then I would switch out the mirror for a piece of art and move the small console with the picture frames to another room. A few decorative pillows on the sofa and I think your room will look great.
