Cost

I'm currently in the market to buy now and I see so many 2 story living rooms that its hard to find a home without one. I've considered buying a home one and taking the chance of trying to do this, but am curious if it will be very costly. Approximately what did this cost?

This two story in-fill was part of a much larger remodel but If I had to break it out separately, this portion would have been about $40k. This would include the coffered ceiling you see, about 400 square feet of living space on the second floor, as well as a full bath on the second floor. In this particular home the basement was unfinished, if this project were to be completed in a home with a finished basement the project becomes much more complicated and would increase cost.

Andrew, this "IS" the eternal question that we professionals are asked all the time. Our simple answer is "how long is a piece of string"? $80 - $110 psf is a "reasonable" amount for an apartment, bearing in mind that there is a whole spectrum of needs and wants and requirements from each owner, age of property and industry standards that have to be met. So yes there are variables that need to be considered. Owner always needs to look at all options and narrow down to what is needed and required. Hope that helps?

Hi EJ, I'm not going to be of much help, but I believe the obvious sources of reclaimed wood would be demolition and removal specialists in Singapore? At least that's how I know how antique dealers source vintage tiles in Singapore. Chatting with reclaimed wood furniture specialists like Journey East (https://www.houzz.com.sg/pro/journeyeast) might help too. And its true shipping costs from overseas would be prohibitive. Malaysia has always been this country's hinterland for raw material, and Indonesia has also played the part of being a significant sourcing ground for furniture makers in the region. You might want to (or have already) make sourcing trips to Central Java or Bali where costs might even be significantly lower than finding these pieces in Singapore.
