Our architects advise that one should be careful about facing north because north light is a very cool light.

In sunny San Diego would that be good way to add supplemental light if I don't want a skylight? specifically, for kitchen, the only room with a flat roof - 1 north-facing window. Been interested in cheaper non-operable window over a stove. [I know about solatube option.]

I'll look sometime whether there's a skylight with film on it that prevents heat gain !? Do you know? Thank you.
